Boise State fell 5-0 to Cal Poly, then regrouped to defeat Santa Clara 4-1 to the end California road trip with a 4-2 mark.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Boise State's beach volleyball team capped a successful trip to California, going 4-2 overall following a split on Monday. Boise State opened the day, falling to 12th-ranked Cal Poly 5-0, then regrouped to defeat Santa Clara 4-1, a team they had previously lost to earlier in the season.
So far this season, the Blue and Orange have lost eight contests; six of those have been at the hands of nationally-ranked opponents. The most recent defeat by a ranked team was Monday at No. 12 Cal Poly, who won all five pairs in straight sets over the Broncos.Â
In the second match of the day, Boise State gained revenge on one of the two unranked teams that had beaten it earlier in the season when they handed Santa Clara a 4-1 defeat at San Luis Obispo. This time around, the Boise State Broncos claimed victories over the Santa Clara Broncos on courts two through five; the No. 1 pair went to SCU in three sets.
Danielle Boss and Madison Nichols put Boise State on the board first with a dominant win on court three, where they defeated Sophia Tulino and Casey Campbell, 21-13, 21-13. It was the 10th win of the season for the Bronco pair.Â
Joey Benson and Emilia Guerra-Acuna extended the Boise State advantage to 2-0 with a straight-set win, 21-19, 21-13, at No. 4 pair to improve to 10-7 on the year.Â
Playing in only their third match as a pair, Katie Martin and Kaylee Mejia clinched the victory for the Blue and Orange when they rallied from one set down to beat Santa Clara's Alexia Gallegos and Elena Radeff in three sets, 18-21, 21-12, 15-11.Â
After Santa Clara had cut the Boise State lead to 3-1 with a three-set victory on court one, Erin Martin and Yasmin Tan claimed the last match of the day at No. 2 pair where they won in three 21-9, 23-25, 15-12 to record their eighth win of the year.Â
After going 4-2 in California, the Broncos return home with both losses to top-20 teams No. 10 Cal and No. 12 Cal Poly. Boise State, who is now 11-8 overall, will take the rest of this week to practice and prepare for their only home contests this year, April 1-2, when they host the Boise State Beach Classic. Teams participating in this year's edition of the Beach Classic are Oregon, Washington and Colorado Mesa.Â
