BOISE, Idaho – Boise State women's soccer earned a 1-1 draw in its season-opening match against Utah Valley, Thursday afternoon at the Lincoln Recreation Field.

The Wolverines opened the scoring in the match as Sydney Bushman found a goal off of a pinballing corner kick in the 19th minute to take the lead. Utah Valley held the majority of possession for the remainder of the half and entered the break with a one-goal advantage.

Boise State took over in the second half, dominating possession and outshooting Utah Valley 8-5 in the period. In the 71st minute, midfielder Morgan Stone created some space outside of the penalty box and took a shot that landed in the opposite side of the net, squaring the match at one goal apiece. A would-be-match-winner by Carly Cross in the 86th minute was waived off for offsides, but the Broncos held on for a season-opening draw.

"We talk a lot about the depth of contribution," said head coach Jim Thomas. "The starting lineup has been so good that it was an easy pick. Then the bench came in and picked up the minutes massively. Teryn Newkirk was unreal. Jayla Land was absolutely fantastic, and Hayden Wilsey had a small role but made a massive impact…I think we can lean on one another a little bit more than we have in the past."
"This team fights hard," said Crenshaw. "We're fit and it's very nice to see the freshmen stepping up like Hayden Wilsey and Teryn Newkirk. We set those standards high and they are so great at meeting them."
"We've been talking about me taking shots from range since that's one of my biggest qualities to score goals for our team," said Stone. "I wasn't doing that as much in the first half, so I wanted to make sure I got some shots in on goal in the second half and was lucky to get that one in."

Top Broncos

Morgan Stone led the way offensively for Boise State, taking three shots with two on goal including her 71st minute scoring effort.
Sophomore forward Ashly Berge played 84 minutes in the match, the most of any outfield player.
Goalkeeper Genevieve Crenshaw racked up five saves on the night.

Notables

After just two shots in the opening half, Boise State fired eight attempts in the second half. The Wolverines outshot the Broncos 11-10 in the match.
Boise State is now undefeated in its last five season-opening matches, boasting a 3-0-2 record.
Stone, who scored four goals for Boise State last season, scored her seventh-career goal in the match.
