Broncos Sweep Aggies with 10-Run Inning
4/23/2023 4:30:00 PM | Softball
The Broncos (27-12, 13-2 MW) scored 10 of their 11 runs in the bottom of the second off of just two hits.
Sydney Groves got the offense going with a single up the middle that led to four-straight bases-loaded walks, a run scored by Mykenzie Hanna off a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly from Jordyn Hutchins. Groves then smashed a three-run homer and Eliyah Flores knocked the ball out of the park for back-to-back home runs.
Abby Bumcrot added a run to Boise State's lead in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Despite scoring three runs in the first two innings, the Aggies (15-22, 6-10) were unable to respond to Taylor Caudill (12-7) and the Broncos.
Quotables
- "I was proud of the way we showed up to the field today," said head coach Justin Shults. "We had completely different energy and intent, and it carried into the game with protecting the ball in really tough weather."
- "We're focused on one game at a time [ahead of the conference tournament]," said Shults. "Our job is to keep putting pressure on the selection committee by building our overall resume, and not really worrying about the one- or two-seed [in the conference tournament] because that will take care of itself by us playing good softball."
Top Broncos
- Sydney Groves homered, collected three RBI and recorded the first hit of the game for the Blue and Orange.
- Eliyah Flores registered a solo home run and walked twice in three plate appearances.
Notables
- Boise State softball can clinch a top-two spot in the conference tournament if it wins two of its next six games, or if Fresno State loses one game and the Broncos win one.
- The Broncos are currently the only team in conference to sweep Utah State this season, extending their win streak over the Aggies to 17 games.
- With a fan attendance of 2,038 over the weekend, Boise State softball set a program record in series attendance.
What's Next
- Boise State softball will host Idaho State for a single nonconference game Wednesday, April 26, at Dona Larsen Park at 4 p.m.
