This is the third MW Coach of the Year honor in Coach Shields' coaching career.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Boise State's Luke Shields has been named the 2023 Mountain West Men's Tennis Coach of the Year. Shields was selected by his peers in the conference for his performance in guiding the Broncos to their best season in eight years.
This is Shields' third MW Coach of the Year award which includes two honors during his tenure – fall 2014 to spring 2021 – at Fresno State in 2017 and 2019.
This year's team exceeded expectations for a squad playing in the first year of a new coaching staff. The Broncos went 21-8 overall – which included an 11-match winning streak – won the MW Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Under Shield's leadership, the Broncos recorded a nine-year high for wins in a season while recording their first MW Tournament title and NCAA appearance in eight years, since 2015. The conference championship was the fifth for Boise State since joining the league and the 17th title all-time. The NCAA Tournament berth was the Broncos' fifth as members of the MW and the 19th in program history.
Three Broncos recorded Postseason All-MW honors in 2023. Simon Arca Costas and Sam Sippel earned All-MW accolades in singles, while Arca Costas and Michael Bott received recognition for doubles.
In singles play, Arca Costas recorded the third-best singles win total in program history going 33-6, which included going undefeated in singles contests during the team dual regular season with 24 straight victories before falling in the postseason at the NCAA Tournament at Arizona. Sophomore James Van Herzeele also reached the 20-win mark in singles finishing with a 24-13 record.
In addition, Michael Bott reached the 30-win milestone in doubles finishing at 30-13, fifth most all-time at Boise State for a single season. In all, four Broncos surpassed 20 wins in doubles: Bott, Arca Costas (28-15), Jan Lucca Marquardt (25-11) and Sam Sippel (21-15).
