Ernstberger, Heffernan Claim Victory in Top Flight Championship

BOISE, Idaho - Pauline Ernstberger and Shauna Heffernan won the top flight in an all-Bronco championship on the final day of the sixth annual Barb Chandler Classic, Sunday afternoon.

Competing in the Blue Draw, the duo went 6-0 on the weekend to earn the championship title of the top draw. Ernstberger and Heffernan swept Montana State to meet up with Boise State's Lorelyz Marruffo and Nicole Discenza in the finals.

Discenza and Marruffo had a strong run in the Blue Draw before being bested by teammates Ernstberger and Heffernan in the championship. The tandem began with a sweep over Montana in the quarterfinals, followed by a 2-1 victory over Weber State to qualify for the championship.

Ryan Kershner and Ella Piron finished second in the White Draw, falling to Utah State in the championship. The duo swept the first Utah State pair in the opening round and defeated Idaho State in the semifinals 3-0 before falling in the championship.

Two Broncos pairs also claimed third-place honors this weekend. In the Orange Draw, Joana Baptista and Ariadna Briones Ginesta defeated Montana State 2-1 with the help of Baptista's singles win of 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-1 to secure the title. In the White Draw, a similar situation occurred while Ryan Kershner and Bhakti Shah earned their third place title over Idaho State with a clutch singles win by Bhakti Shah 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Top Broncos

Shauna Heffernan posted a 2-0 record in singles this weekend in the top flight.
Bhakti Shah posted a 2-0 record in singles this weekend in the White Draw.
Ella Piron posted a 3-0 record in singles this weekend in the White Draw.

Notables

This is the second consecutive year the Broncos have won the top flight of the Barb Chandler Classic.
The Broncos went 16-7 in singles and 7-5 in doubles on the weekend, not including matches against fellow Broncos.
Boise State swept four pairs among the three draws.

"It is always amazing to have a home event and bring in some amazing competition to compete against us to help us see where we need to continue to get better. All these matches and wins taught us many valuable lessons where we really got to see where our player identities got to shine."

What's Next

Pauline Ernstberger, Nicole Discenza and Lorelyz Marruffo will head to Cary, N.C., for the week-long ITA All-American Championships (Sept. 29-Oct. 8). The same weekend, the remainder of the team will travel to Long Beach, Calif., to participate in the Beach Tennis Tournament (Oct. 6-8).
