CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Boise State's men's tennis team opened the spring semester with the Tar Heel Invitational over the weekend, featuring North Carolina and Columbia in the three-day hidden duals event, Saturday through Monday.
 
In singles play, the Broncos were led by senior Caden Moortgat, who collected a three-set victory over North Carolina's Dennis Perumov. Moortgat rallied from a set down, winning the second frame in a tiebreaker to force a third set where he dominated, shutting out Perumov to claim the win, 4-6, 7-6, 6-0.  
 
Jip van Assendelft claimed a three-set singles win on Monday, defeating Columbia's Alex Kotzen 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Freshman Liam Toroman also brought home a victory on Monday, taking his contest in straight sets over Columbia's Jayden Templeman 6-1, 6-1.
 
In doubles play, the tandem of John Chin and James Van Herzeele led the way with two victories, defeating Columbia's Hugo Hashimoto and Templeman 6-4 on Saturday, then followed with another win on Monday over the Lions' Alex Kotzen and Templeman by a 6-4 score.

Notables

  • Also, winning doubles matches were Boise State's duos of van Assendelft and Sam Sippel, as well as Jan Lucca Marquardt and Caden Moortgat.
  • Marquardt and Moortgat also battled Columbia's 21st-ranked doubles tandem of Nick Kotzen and Max Westphal before falling 7-5.
  • Doubles were tightly contested throughout the weekend; of the nine defeats in doubles, two went to tiebreakers, three were decided 7-5, and two went down by 6-4 scores.
  • The Broncos went 2-6 in singles contests that went three sets, with Moortgat and van Assendelft collecting the wins.
  • Columbia's team is ranked 12th nationally, while North Carolina is 13th.
  • Tulsa was also scheduled to compete at the event but was unable to make it due to travel issues.

What's Next

Boise State opens the team dual season this Saturday when they host a doubleheader featuring Idaho State at 1 p.m. and Lewis-Clark State at 6 p.m., both matches will be played at Boise State's Boas Indoor Tennis Center.
