Bartsch Leads Broncos Past Colorado State on the Road in Five Sets

10/10/2024 10:30:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – It was not always pretty, but Boise State volleyball did what it needed to do to win in five sets, 25-18, 25-20, 14-25, 12-25, and 15-12, at league-leading Colorado State on Thursday night. It is only the second road win for the Blue and Orange in Fort Collins all-time.

It was a match of ups and downs for the Broncos. Boise State's offense was on fire in the first and second sets, went cold for the next two, then lit it up again in the fifth, hitting .450 percent to put it away.

After Colorado State scored on the first two plays of the first set, Boise State rolled off a 9-0 run to go up 9-2 and never trailed. The Broncos led by as many as 11 points before taking it by seven at 25-18.

Boise State hit .433 in the second set as it raced out to a 5-1 lead. The Rams came back to tie the score twice, the last at 8-8, when the Broncos regrouped with a 5-1 run to go up 13-9. The Broncos then held off CSU down the stretch, winning it by five, 25-20.

The Rams jumped on the Broncos in the third and fourth sets, winning both decisively to force the match to a fifth.

Boise State regrouped and found its offensive touch in the fifth set. Trailing 3-1, the Broncos rallied with a 6-1 run to take control at 7-4. CSU tried to come back several times but could get no closer than two points down the stretch. The Blue and Orange hit .450 in the fifth set and won it by three points, 15-12 to clinch the match.

QUOTABLES

Shawn Garus, head coach
  • "The team had tremendous focus to start the match; everyone was dialed in and knew what needed to be done to cause CSU problems."
  • "The fifth set was great, especially after we struggled in the third and fourth. The team regrouped and came back when they needed to and got the win on the road against a very good team."
  • "I thought Paige was awesome. She just wanted the ball and led the team. Kiersten Van Kirk had some really big hits for us at big moments, and Layla Smith played great for us, coming in off the bench."
