Boise State Comes Up Short in Four Sets Against New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE – Paige Bartsch and Annie Kaminski combined for 25 kills, but in the end, Boise State came up short in a 3-1 (24-26, 25-14, 25-20, 25-14) score as New Mexico rallied for the win Thursday night in Albuquerque.
 
Boise State was outhit .268 percent to .063 percent, but the Broncos were only three kills behind the Lobos, 54 to 51. The key to the match was UNM's 17 blocks, which made the Broncos second-guess themselves when attacking the ball, resulting in 39 errors to the Lobos' 12.
 
Boise State claimed an early lead in the contest by winning a tough set one in extra points after 12 ties and five lead changes. Down 23-22, the Broncos regrouped and rallied to down the Lobos in extra points 26-24.
 
Boise State opened the second and fourth sets slowly, while the Lobos came out fired up, claiming early leads that they never relinquished, winning both 25-14.
 
The third set was close until late and featured five lead changes and eight ties. Tied at 15, the Broncos struggled to hold off UNM as the Lobos came from behind to take the lead and never trailed again. UNM extended its lead to five points down the stretch, winning 25-20.

 

TOP BRONCOS

  • Paige Bartsch had a team-high 14 kills to go with two service aces, 14 digs, one block solo and a team-best 17 points.
  • Annie Kaminski had 11 kills while hitting .259 percent.
  • Kiki Remensperger had team highs for assists with 21 and digs with 22 to go with four kills and one block assist.

NOTABLES

  • Paige Bartsch's two service aces moved her into the team lead for the season with 44 and into fourth place on the single-season list for aces during the Rally Scoring Era (since 2001).
  • Bartsch's two service aces also moved her into a tie for first in career aces during the Rally Scoring Era with Lauren Ohlinger (2019-22) at 135.
  • Bartsch recorded her ninth double-double of the season and 29th of her career.
  • Kiki Remensperger recorded her third 20/20 double-double of the season and now has three of the four (assists/digs) at Boise State during the Rally Scoring Era. It was also her 11th match – a team-high – with a double-double (which includes two triple-doubles).
  • The loss moved the Broncos to 16-10 overall and 8-8 in the league, good for sixth place.
  • Boise State and New Mexico split the regular season series, with the home team winning each time; Boise State leads the all-time series 14-13.
