BOISE, Idaho — Boise State released the men's tennis fall schedule Tuesday afternoon. The schedule features nine regular-season tournaments and three postseason events.
This year marks a change in NCAA collegiate tennis, with the NCAA National Individual Championships (singles and doubles championships) moving from May to November. This change gives added importance to the fall competitions, as student-athletes will now qualify for the national championships based solely on their fall results.
The Broncos open the fall this weekend when they host the annual Dar Walters Classic at the Appleton Tennis Center Friday through Sunday, Sept. 13-15.
For the first time since 2016, a couple of Broncos have been invited to participate in the Battle of the Bay in San Francisco. This prestigious – invite-only – tournament will be hosted by the University of San Francisco this Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 12-15, at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco.
The Blue and Orange will follow a busy opening weekend with a trip to Cambridge, Massachusetts, for the Chowderfest hosted by Harvard University on Sept. 20-22. This will be the first time the Broncos have participated in this event.
The week of Sept. 27-29, Boise State will return to the ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains for the third straight year. The competition is hosted by Air Force at the Academy's tennis complex. Last year, Caden Moortgat and Jan Lucca Marquardt reached the main draw semifinals in doubles, while Teague Burger advanced to his flight's consolation final.
The ITA All-American – the second invite-only tournament – is Sept. 21-29 at Tulsa, Oklahoma. Last year, the Broncos' Sam Sippel went 5-2 and advanced to the main draw's consolation quarterfinal round. He was the first Bronco to reach the main draw since 2013.
The first major change of the fall compared to previous seasons is the addition of the Mountain West Individual Championships, which will be played in Las Vegas Oct. 2-5. The singles and doubles championship winners will advance to the Conference Masters in San Diego, Calif., Nov. 7-10, for a chance to qualify for the NCAA National Championships two weeks later.
The ITA Mountain Regional Championships will take place Oct. 17-22 in Las Vegas. Last season, James Van Herzeele reached the round of 16 in singles, while Jett Middleton defeated teammate Caden Moortgat for the consolation singles title. This year, the top three regional finishers will advance to the new ITA Sectional Championships in November for a berth into the NCAA Championships.
The regular season closes at the SMU Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge in Dallas the week of Nov. 1-3.
The fall postseason will feature two qualifying tournaments for the national championships. The ITA Sectional Championships in Malibu, California, and the Conference Masters in San Diego will both take place the weekend of Nov. 7-10.
The fall season wraps up with the NCAA National Individual Championships, a five-day tournament that will take place in Waco, Texas, the week of Nov. 19-24.
