COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Boise State redshirt-senior Jett Middleton has been named the Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week for Jan. 20-26. This is his first MW Player of the Week accolade in his career.
Middleton led the Broncos to a road split last week at the ITA Kickoff Weekend Tournament in Charlottesville, Virginia. Boise State came up just short of an upset of No. 5 Virginia 4-2, then regrouped to defeat VCU 4-0 on the second day.
He played at No. 1 singles and doubles, going 1-0 at both positions.
Against Virginia, he and doubles partner Carson Baker were leading the No. 92 ranked pair – Dylan Dietrich and Mans Dahlberg – in the country 4-3 when the match was abandoned following the clinching of the team point.
At No. 1 singles versus Virginia, Middleton upset Dietrich, the 57th-ranked player nationally, after rallying from a set down to dominate the final two frames in a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 win.
In Sunday's victory over VCU, Middleton and Baker won No. 1 doubles 7-5, clinching the team doubles point for Boise State.
Finally, in singles against VCU, Middleton was on the verge of a straight-set victory at No. 1, up 6-3, 5-4 on German Samofalov when the match was abandoned.
With last week's results, Middleton improved to 8-8 in singles and 5-9 in doubles on the year.
Middleton and the Broncos will play a doubleheader this Friday at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center against Idaho State at noon and Eastern Washington at 4 p.m.
