Broncos Conclude Successful Opening Weekend

TUCSON, Ariz. – Boise State beach volleyball opened its 2025 campaign with a successful weekend, finishing 3-2 over three days of competition. The Broncos defeated Arizona, Oregon and UTEP while falling to No. 11 Arizona State and No. 18 Grand Canyon.
Boise State opened the Cactus Classic against No. 11 Arizona State. After suffering losses on the No. 1 and No. 4 courts, Allyson Alden and Sharli O'Neil picked up a straight-set victory from the No. 2 position. The Sun Devils claimed the victory with a win on court three, but Lily Patock and Elli Wolthuis picked up a close 22-20, 24-22 victory as Boise State fell to the 11th ranked team 3-2. The Broncos bounced back against Oregon, securing three straight-set victories en route to the first sweep of the season.Â
On the second day of competition, Boise State fell behind 2-1 to No. 18 Grand Canyon. Ava Anderson and Addison Wolden secured a straight-set victory from the top court, but the Lopes clinched the victory with a three-set match from court five. Alden and O'Neil won their third victory of the weekend with a 21-18, 13-21, 23-21 victory from the No. 2 position as the Blue and Orange lost 3-2.

The Broncos jumped out to a 2-0 lead, garnering wins from Alden and O'Neil on court two and Charlee Ellena and Emilia Guerra-Acuña on court four. The Wildcats responded with wins from the No. 1 and 3 positions, sending the dual's decision to court five. Patock and Wolthuis put the team on their back, securing a 19-21, 21-17, 15-9 victory to give Boise State its second win of the season.
Boise State wrapped up the weekend on Sunday with a road dual against UTEP. Patock and Wolthuis put the Broncos on the board first with a three-set victory on court five, while Ellena and Guerra-Acuña followed suit with a straight-set victory on court four. The Miners responded, winning the matches on courts two and three to force the dual to come down to the top position. Anderson and Wolden pulled through, winning 21-18, 21-15 to propel Boise State to victory.
Notables
- Two pairs finished a team-best 4-1 on the weekend. Allyson Alden/Sharli O'Neil went 4-1 from the No. 2 position while Lily Patock/Elli Wolthuis finished the weekend 4-1 from court five.
- O'Neil became the sixth Bronco in program history to eclipse 50 career victories. The senior currently owns a 51-27 career record.
- The Broncos maintain a perfect all-time record against Oregon, moving to 18-0.
- Boise State picked up their second-straight victory over Arizona. The Broncos had previously lost the first 14 matches against the Wildcats.
- The dual against UTEP was the first time competing against the Miners in program history.

The Broncos will compete in the toughest weekend of competition of the season at the TCU Invitational. The two-day event will begin March 7 in Fort Worth, Texas, and will consist of duals against No. 4 TCU, No. 12 Florida Atlantic, No. 14 Texas and No. 7 Florida State.
