BOISE STATE TENURE
Daniel Hangstefer joined the program in July 2023 as the program’s associate head coach. He assists with the daily operations, coaching and recruiting.In his first year with the program he helped guide the Broncos to a 20-11 overall record, the Mountain West Regular Season Co-Championship, the MW Tournament title and a berth to the NCAA Championship. Two Broncos were named All-MW in singles and one doubles team made All-MW. Sam Sippel advanced to the NCAA National Singles Championship. Other honors earned by the team were one CSC Academic All-American, two CSC Academic All-District and four ITA Scholar-Athletes.
His second year saw the team reach the 20-win mark for the third consecutive season going 21-6 and finish the year ranked No. 42 nationally, they were ranked as high as No. 29 on Feb. 25. The Blue and Orange repeated as MW Regular Season Champion and advance to the NCAA Championship for the third straight season where Boise State fell at No. 11 California in the opening round. During the season the team recorded an upset victory over then-22nd-ranked Michigan State to go with notable wins over Indiana, VCU, Wichita State, Denver and No. 49 Washington. Jett Middleton and James Van Herzeele reached the inaugural ITA West Sectional during the fall.
PRIOR TO BOISE STATE
Hangstefer brings a lot of experience with him to Boise State, having coached in the collegiate ranks for 14 years, 10 as a head coach. He spent the last five years as the head men’s coach at the University of Idaho.Over the last three years, Hangstefer’s Idaho teams won two Big Sky Conference regular season championships in 2021 (co) and 2022 and two Big Sky tournament titles to advance to the 2022 and 2023 NCAA Championship.
The 2023 Big Sky Coach of the Year has mentored two conference players of the year and one freshman of the year during his tenure at Idaho. His teams have earned a combined nine all-conference honors (six in singles and three in doubles) with four honorable mention accolades. Other major accomplishments by his student-athletes include one doubles team that reached the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Region Championship. Two years later, a different doubles pair won the regional title to advance to the 2022 ITA Fall Nationals.
Hangstefer’s teams at Idaho also excelled in the classroom, where they have been recognized as ITA All-Academic Teams for four straight years, including this past spring.
Before Idaho, Hangstefer was the men’s and women’s head coach at Ferris State University, an NCAA DII program in Big Rapids, Mich., for one season. His men’s team won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. The team finished 21-3 overall with a No. 17 national ranking.
He also coached the men’s and women’s teams at NCAA DII Metropolitan State University of Denver from 2013-2017. Hangstefer’s 2017 men’s and women’s teams both won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. He was named the 2017 ITA South Central Region Women’s Coach of the Year and a two-time RMAC Women’s Co-Coach of the Year in 2016 and 2017.
Prior to Metropolitan State, Hangstefer was the assistant men’s and women’s coach at Midwestern State University, a NCAA DII school in Wichita Falls, Texas. While there, he was named the ITA South Central Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year in 2013. The men’s team won the 2013 conference and South Central Regional championships and advanced to the national quarterfinals. The 2013 women’s team won the South Central Region championship and reached the round of 16.
