Junior College Eleven Wins From Teachers, 21 to 0, as 2500 Fans Turn Out for Dedication of Lights

BOISE, Idaho – Broncos of the Boise Junior College football team, with a lucky rabbit's foot tucked carefully inside the waist band of each man's pants, inaugurated night football in Boise Friday by trouncing the Lewiston Normal School, 21 to 0. A crowd estimated at 2500 persons saw the game, sponsored by the Boise Junior Chamber of Commerce.

The Broncos scored a touchdown on a 70-yard run by Stoddard, fullback, in the first quarter; a safety when Stanley, guard, blocked a Lewiston punt in the second period; another touchdown by line drives in the third quarter and a last touchdown on a 30-yard pass, Cantlin to Kidd, in the final period. Cantlin added the twenty-first point with a kick after the final goal crossing.

Need Their Luck

The Broncos needed all the luck their rabbits' feet could bring them, however, when the Lewiston Teachers time after time drove deep into Bronco territory and kept the air full of accurately tossed passes before losing the ball on interceptions or fourth downs.

The rabbits' feet, some of them given special blessing by Gus Urresti, regular fullback out with a fractured leg, also came in handy in the last 20 seconds of play when the Broncos had to finish the game with only 10 men on the field. Coach Max Eiden had joyously sent all his reserves to the showers a few minutes before. Lippa, playing a stellar game at end, was injured and taken out of the fray. With no substitutes to help them the other 10 warriors spent the seconds knocking down long passes. They also deliberately took a couple of offside penalties to waste the time until the final gun.

"Dead Man" Play

This playing with 10 men in their own territory in part compensated for an argument over the last Junior College touchdown, when several fans claimed the Broncos had 12 men on the field. A substitute was slow reaching the referee at that time, saw the ball was being snapped and made a dive out of bounds. The referee called the play legal but some fans disagreed.

The game was replete with thrills from start to finish. The Junior College's "dead man" play brought the first tally. Stoddard, Bronco fullback, played "dead" well enough to deceive the Teachers but came to life in a hurry, took the ball and broke free around left end. He raced 70 yards to score. The kick for point was blocked.

Broncos Score Safety

In the second quarter Lewiston took the ball after a punt and was promptly penalized 15 yards for holding. Kesler's punt was blocked by Stanley of the Broncos and rolled into the end zone, where Kesler fell on it. It counted as a safety and two points for Boise.

In the third period, behind excellent blocking by Nalley, Shaw, Boise quarterback, returned a punt to the Lewiston 47. From there a series of line plays shoved the ball to the Lewiston half-yard stripe. Lewiston held there for two plays but Shaw rounded right end on fourth down to cross the line standing up. Pass for point was knocked down.

The last Boise score, in the fourth quarter, resulted after the Junior College had recovered a Lewiston fumble on the Teacher 34. Cantlin, substitute quarterback, made four yards. A lateral pass to Cantlin netted 12 more and an offside penalty cost five yards. Then, while a Bronco substitute was making a leap to get off the field, Cantlin shot a long 30-yard spiral pass to Kidd, who caught it over his shoulder as he crossed the Lewiston goal. After a brief argument over the substitute's leap and 12 men on the field, Cantlin kicked the extra point.

Lewiston Threatens

The Teachers came back strong, returning the kickoff to the Boise 40 and filling the air with passes. It was then Lippa was hurt and Boise continued with a 10-man team. But the passes failed to bring a score and the game ended with the ball on the Bronco 15-yard stripe. Final score – 21 to 0 for the Broncos.

The Teachers played a much more effective game than the score indicated, registering 11 first downs to nine for the Junior College.

Kesler, Lewiston quarterback, proved a real triple-threat man. He punted, ran the ball effectively and passed beautifully, though his receivers weren't always ready for him. He had good support otherwise, however.

For the Junior College, all the boys were hitting the line hard. Blocking was exceptionally good.
