Broncos Lose Heartbreaker at UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - Boise State's men's tennis team fell in heartbreaking fashion Sunday afternoon at UC Irvine by a 4-3 score. Boise State rallied from one down after dropping the team doubles point to take a 3-2 lead over the Anteaters behind singles victories from Brian Tran, Morgan Stone and Kyle Butters.
Unfortunately, UCI came back claiming the final two singles matches to edge the Broncos 4-3. Boise State falls to 2-16 on the season with a Mountain West Conference match next on the schedule for Tuesday at UNLV.
The Anteaters opened the day by taking the team doubles point 2-0 with wins on courts two and three. The Broncos 75th-ranked doubles team of Butters and Jack Heslin were leading 4-3 in their No. 1 singles contest when it was abandoned with the clinching of the team point.
Tran, a freshman from Australia, brought the blue and orange back with a dominating straight-set victory 6-0, 6-1 over UCI's Luis Lopez at No. 3 singles.
After UCI had regained its lead 2-1 with a victory over the Broncos Pedro Platzeck on court four, the Broncos' Morgan Stone pulled Boise State even once more. The sophomore from Marietta, Ga., swept Bruce Man-Son-Hing 6-4, 6-0.
Boise State took a 3-2 lead when Kyle Butters' opponent was forced to retire. Butters had rallied from a set down to force the match into a third when Sebastian Heim stopped. At the time of the retirement Butters was up 2-6, 6-1, 1-0.
The Anteaters rallied to claim the team victory with wins on courts two and six. At No. 2 singles the Broncos' Heslin fought hard but fell 6-3, 7-5. Greg Wischer lost a tightly contested three set affair winning the first set only to fall 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 to Vatsal Bajpai on court six.
