Broncos Fall 4-2 to Air Force

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State men's tennis lost a tightly contested match 4-2 to Air Force Sunday morning at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center at Boise. Boise State earned singles victories from Brian Tran and Jack Heslin, as well as a doubles win by Kyle Butters and Ryland McDermott, but it was not enough as Air Force held off the Broncos for the win.
The loss drops Boise State to 4-20 overall and 1-3 in Mountain West play with a match versus instate-rival Idaho at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Center in a nonconference contest.
The day started with Air Force claiming the doubles points with a 7-5 win at No. 1 and a 6-4 victory on court three. Boise State's No. 2 doubles team of Butters and McDermott was the first to finish defeating the Falcons' tandem of Isaac Perez and Luke Sanderson 6-2 to give the Broncos a brief lead.
Singles was also a battle with Boise State taking a 2-1 lead in the match with victories by Heslin and Tran. Heslin was the first off the court after he dispatched Air Force's Issac Perez in straight sets 7-5, 6-0. The sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand, is now a team-best 17-12 on the year and 10-9 in duals.
Tran was the second Bronco to finish in singles on the day as he put away Lucas Fumagalli in two sets 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. The freshman from Greystanes, Australia, improved to 14-9 overall and a team-beset 11-8 in spring duals.
The Falcons clinched the team victory with three straight singles victories on courts six, four and five, respectively.
Butters was up 6-3, 4-2 at No. 1 singles when his match was abandoned following the clinching of the team victory by Air Force.
