THIS WEEK
● WHAT'S HAPPENING: Boise State (11-4, 3-1 MW) hits the road for two MW contests at New Mexico and UNLV.● THURSDAY: Boise State travels to Albuquerque, N.M., to face the New Mexico Lobos on Thursday night at 7 p.m. (MT). This is the first encounter of two this season between the Broncos and Lobos. Boise State won the lone meeting last year 3-0 in Boise.
● SATURDAY: The Blue and Orange will close the weekend at UNLV on Saturday at 3 p.m. (MT) in Cox Pavilion. This will be the first of two meetings this year between the Broncos and Rebels. UNLV won the only meeting between them last year in Las Vegas by a 3-0 score.
BOISE STATE STORYLINES
BOISE STATE SPLIT IN WEEK TWO OF MW PLAY● Boise State enters the weekend coming off a home split last weekend falling in four to Nevada on Thursday, then beat San Jose State in four on Saturday.
● Janell Walley led the team in both contests recording double-doubles in both ... she had a team-high 11 kills and 13 digs versus Nevada, then team-highs for kills and digs with 12 and 15, respectively, against SJSU.
● Jessica Donahue recorded a team-high 19 kills on the week ... She tied the school record with 12 against Nevada, then followed with seven versus SJSU.
BOISE STATE'S RECORD
● Boise State enters week seven of the season at 11-4 overall and 3-1 in MW play.
● The Broncos have won 11 of their last 13 contests.
● Boise State's three nonconference loses came against teams ranked in the top-21 at the time of the match: at No. 9 BYU, vs. No. 16 Marquette in Provo, Utah, and at No. 21 Missouri.
●The Broncos are 4-1 at home.
CHANGING LINEUPS
● To date, 12 different Broncos have earned at least one start (not including libero) in the first 13 contests.
● At this time only Janell Walley, Lauren Ohlinger and Danielle Boss have started every match.
WALLEY LEADS THE BRONCOS
● After 15 matches, Janell Walley has led the Broncos to its early success hitting a team-best 38.8 percent ... she has hit 40 percent or better in seven matches to date and above 30 percent in 10 of 15.
● She has tallied a team-high 196 kills, 12 service aces, four block solos and 54 block assists for a team-high 239.0 points on the year.
● Walley is second in the MW and 38th nationally for hitting percentage (.388), ranks fourth in MW for kills per set (3.70), eighth in blocks per set (1.09) and second in points per set (4.51).
● She had recorded seven-straight matches in double-figure kills until the Missouri match (Sept. 15) ... she now has 12 on the year.
● Walley tied her career-high for kills against Middle Tennessee (Sept. 6) with 19 ... then broke it with 23 in the victory over Austin Peay (Sept. 13).
● She has seven double-doubles on the year for a team-high 15 in her career.
DUFFY COMING ON STRONG
● Shae Duffy is tied for the second most matches this season with double-digit kills with six.
● She hit a career-high 15 in the win over Middle Tennessee (Sept. 6).
● On the year she has a team-third-best 122 kills (2.49 kps) to go with 20 blocks.
OHLINGER SHINNING IN DEBUT SEASON
● True freshman Lauren Ohlinger has had a solid start to her Boise State career tied for the second-most matches with double-digit kills with six.
● To date, she has the second-most kills on the team with 140 for a 2.64 per set average ... she is fourth on the team in digs with 123 (2.32 dps), fifth in blocks with 28 and second in points with 171.0.
● She had a team-high 18 kills in the win over Utah Valley (Aug. 31) ... her career-high of 19 kills led Boise State in the win over Idaho State (Sept. 19).
● Ohlinger enters the week as one of four Broncos who has recorded a double-double on the season with four.
BOSS DOUBLING UP
● On the year she has 559 assists and 141 digs (2.66 dps) ... she is second in the MW and 37th nationally for assists per set at 10.55.
● She has seven matches this season with 40-plus assists.
● Sophomore setter Danielle Boss had an active streak of five double-doubles (assists/digs) Aug. 31 thru Sept. 13, all Broncos wins ... she now has seven on the year.
DONAHUE ANCHORING THE BLUE WALL
● Last year, Jessica Donahue led the Broncos with 135 blocks to rank 14th in a season all-time at Boise State.
● In 2019 she leads once again with 79 entering the week.
● In MW play she has a league-high 35 blocks and leads with 2.33 per set ... she has tallied at least seven in every match and has a high of 12 versus Nevada (Oct. 3)
● Her 12 blocks against Nevada (Oct. 3) was a career-high and tied the school record for blocks in a match ... it was the third match in her career with double-figure blocks.
● Ranks third in the MW and 21st nationally for total blocks with 79.
● She is first in the MW and fourth in NCAA for blocks per set at 1.55.
● Donahue has nine contests this season with five or more blocks
DEFENSIVELY SPEAKING
● The Broncos are ranked fifth nationally and second in the Mountain West for blocks per set at 2.8 and are fourth in digs per set at 14.58.
● They rank fourth in the MW for opponents' hitting percentage at .175.
● The Broncos have held eight of their last nine opponents below 20 percent hitting going 8-1 in the that stretch.
● On the year they are 9-2 when holding opponents below 20 percent hitting, 9-2 when leading in blocks and 10-1 with more digs than the opposition.
HEAD COACH NOTES
HEAD COACH SHAWN GARUS● Coach Garus entered his 11th season at Boise State and 19th overall just 14 wins shy of 300 career wins at 286 ... he is now three short at 297.
● Garus is 297-255 overall in his 19th year as a collegiate head coach.
● He is currently 189-136 at Boise State in his 11th season.
● At Boise State, Garus is a two-time MW Coach of the Year (2015, 2016), as well as the 2016 AVCA Region Coach of the Year.
● Garus ranks second in total wins in program history, out of 10 coaches all-time.
● He has recorded eight winning seasons overall, including an active streak of five straight.
● His Boise State teams have recorded three seasons (2010, 2015, 2016) with 20-plus wins.
MATCH PREVIEWS
NEW MEXICO PREVIEW● Boise State travels to Albuquerque, N.M., for a Thursday night encounter with the Lobos at 7 p.m. (MT).
● The Lobos are 5-11 overall and 0-4 in MW play entering the week ... they dropped a pair of road matches last week at Fresno State (3-0) and San Diego State (3-1).
● UNM has been hitting at 16.7 percent (9th MW) and holding its opponents to 21.5 percent (7th MW).
● The Lobos were picked to place seventh out of 11 teams in the MW coaches poll.
● Boise State is 6-9 all-time versus the Lobos and 6-8 in MW matches ... the Broncos have won five of the last six encounters.
UNLV PREVIEW
● The Broncos will close the weekend at Las Vegas against the UNLV Rebels at 3 p.m. (MT) on Saturday.
● The Rebels enter the week at 6-9 overall and 2-2 in conference ... they swept both road matches last week defeating San Diego State (3-1) and Fresno State (3-2).
● UNLV is hitting 22.1 percent on the year (4th MW) and holding opponents to 25.1 percent (11th MW).
● The Broncos are 12-6 all-time against UNLV and 10-4 in MW play.
● UNLV was predicted to place third in the 2019 MW race out of 11 teams.
