Broncos Win Four-Straight Singles Matches to Rally Past Portland State
EUGENE, Ore. – Wyatt DeMulling's singles win on court five clinched a 4-3 victory as the Broncos came back to take down Portland State Saturday in Eugene, Ore.
The doubles point went to the Vikings 2-0 after Portland State's Sam Roberts and Majeed Bukhari defeated the Broncos' Stefan Lalovic and Simon Stenlund 6-3 at the No. 3 position.
Down one, heading into the singles matches Boise State came back strong taking four of the six matches.
Down 2-0 after PSU took No. 1 singles, Simon Arca Costas put the Broncos on the board defeating Avery West in straight-sets 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. The win improved Arca Costas to 16-8 overall and 5-1 in team duals.
Soon after Arca Costas' win, Stenlund tied the match at 2-2 when he put away Sam Roberts 6-2, 6-3 on court six to improve to 15-4 on the year and 3-0 this spring.
Luka Soskic put the Blue and Orange ahead 3-2 when he dispatched PSU's Lucas Branco in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. The sophomore transfer remains undefeated in singles play going 5-0 since joining the team over winter break.
DeMulling completed a streak of four-consecutive singles victories by the Broncos against the Vikings to clinch the team victory at 4-2. DeMulling won a tiebreaker in set one, then put Nikola Dimitrijevic away in the second to claim a 7-6(1), 6-3 win on court five. With the win, the junior moved to 4-1 in spring duals and 13-8 overall in singles this year.
The Broncos will return to Boise where they will kick-off a seven-match homestand next Saturday, February 16, at 10 a.m. against Whitman College.
