Broncos Open Homestand by Rolling Past Whitman 6-1

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State men's tennis ran past Whitman College with a 6-1 win at the Boas Complex Saturday morning. A strong start from the doubles teams helped the Broncos clinch a dominant performance against the Blues.

"I was really happy with the start of the match, we came out with better energy in doubles, something we've struggled with this season," said coach Kristian Widen. "This was a tricky match for us, the guys had to come out and take care of business. Whitman is well coached. Jeff Northam does a great job over there and his team is not going to lay down and let you run over them, they are going to fight for it. This was one of those matches that you couldn't give them a window of opportunity or they would go after it.

"Overall, I'm happy with the improvement we've been making and the way we've been competing. It doesn't matter whether it's a top-25 team like Oregon or a division three program like Whitman. Our guys understand that they have to come out and compete at a high level for every match day in and day out. That is something I am super happy about, they have shown me they can get up for each match."

Boise State clinched a doubles sweep early on in the match. Jack Heslin and Simon Arca Costas had the first win on court one defeating Dan Foster and Ben Kirsh of Whitman 6-4.

On court three, Simon Stenlund and Stefan Lalovic dispatched Adam Rapaport and Rajul Chikkalingaiah to collect the second victory in doubles to clinch the team point. Stenlund and Lalovic closed out their win 6-4 over the Blues duo.

Wyatt DeMulling and Max Blancaneaux did not finish their match which was tied at 4-4 when it was discontinued as Boise State took the first two wins in doubles.

In singles action, Boise State took the first three matches to clinch the victory up 4-0. DeMulling defeated Alex Hwang at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-2, to start the roll. The junior improved to 14-8 overall in singles and 5-1 in duals.

Heslin downed Ben Kirsh at No. 1 singles in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

Arca Costas clinched the win when he won on court three to make it 4-0 Broncos. The freshman defeated Rapaport at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-3. His victory improved him in singles to 17-8 on the year and 6-1 in spring duals.

The singles matches were played out to conclusion on Saturday once the team win was decided with Lalovic beating Chikkalingaiah 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles to improve to 6-2 overall.

Meanwhile, Luka Soskic put away Foster on court two 6-2, 6-4. With the win, the winter-break transfer to Boise State remains undefeated in singles this spring at 6-0.

Boise State took a 6-0 lead before Whitman claimed the final contest to make it 6-1 at the end. The Blue and Orange will continue its seven-match homestand on March 2 against Weber State.
