Boise State Storms Past Weber State for Third-Straight Win
3/2/2019 3:17:00 PM | Men's Tennis
BOISE, Idaho - Simon Stenlund's straight-set victory at No. 6 singles clinched the match for Boise State as the Broncos stormed past the Weber State Wildcats 4-0. Boise State opened by claiming the team doubles point, then put it away with three-straight singles victories by Simon Arca Costas, Luka Soskic and Stenlund.
"I thought we came out on fire and got that doubles point which was big for our momentum," said Boise State head coach Kristian Widen. "We made some crucial changes in our doubles lineup today and it worked for us. I was really happy with the play of Stefan (Lalovic) and Wyatt (DeMulling) at No. 1 doubles, they did not get to finish but they played well together. We worked really hard all week and the guys came out and executed against a very good Weber State squad that beat Gonzaga a few weeks ago, a team that beat us. We knew it was going to take a team effort to win this and it was, everyone stepped up and played hard. It was a good win for us!"
Boise State switched things up a bit in doubles where the Broncos featured three completely new pairs. Jack Heslin and Arca Costas started the ball rolling with a commanding 6-2 victory over the Wildcats' Bo-Han Li and Paul Ohde on court two.
The team point went Boise State's way following a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles where Stenlund and Soskic dispatched Cezary Walkusz and Nick Werner. The third pair was on court one where Stefan Lalovic and Wyatt DeMulling were leading 5-4 when the contest was abandoned following the clinch.
Leading by one entering the singles competition, the Broncos needed to win only three of the six contests to clinch the victory. Arca Costas was the first of the three defeating Ohde in straight sets on court four 6-4, 6-1 to make the team score 2-0 Boise State. That was the third-straight singles victory for the freshman from Spain who improved to 18-8 overall and 7-1 in spring team duals.
Soskic brought home the second singles victory needed by Boise State to clinch. The sophomore transfer remained undefeated at 7-0 when he beat Weber State's No. 2 player 7-5, 6-0.
Soskic's victory setup Stenlund to clinch the match and the native of Stockholm, Sweden, did not disappoint. Stenlund faced the Wildcats No. 6 player Cezary Walkusz for the decisive team point defeating him in straight sets after rallying in the second set to claim the 6-3, 7-5 victory to hand the Broncos the 4-0 win. In addition, Stenlund improved to 16-5 overall on the year and 4-1 in spring duals.
Other notable highlights for Boise State included an impressive rally on court three by senior Maximilien Blancaneaux who rallied from 4-2 down in set one to force it into a tiebreaker. He then found himself in a 5-0 hole during the tiebreaker only to rally for an exciting 8-6 win.
Blancaneaux's (7-6(6), 3-2), as well as Heslin's (3-6, 6-3, 1-4) and DeMulling's (6-2, 4-6, 3-2) singles matches were all abandoned once Boise State clinched the team victory.
The win was the third straight for the Blue and Orange who improved to 6-2 overall with the win. Boise State is in the middle of a seven-match homestand which continues next weekend when the Broncos host Brigham Young and instate-rival Idaho on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
