BOISE, Idaho - Boise State men's tennis fell 4-0 to Utah State Saturday afternoon in what was the regular season finale for both teams. The loss drops the Broncos to 11-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play while the first-place Aggies improved to 18-8 with a 6-1 MW mark.
Boise State honored its two seniors – Jack Heslin and Max Blancaneaux – prior to the match in what was their final match at Appleton.
The day started off with the Aggies taking the doubles point. Simon Stenlund and Wyatt DeMulling came up short on court three as Utah State's Rithvik Bollipalli and Duro Opacic claimed the 6-3 win. Blancaneaux and Heslin were close to capturing the victory at the No. 1 spot, but the Aggies' team of Isaac Arevalo Gómez and Jose Carvajal was able to pull out the 6-4 result to solidify the doubles point.
Stefan Lalovic and Simon Arca Costas had the 5-3 advantage on court two when play was stopped.
The Aggies extended their lead to 2-0 in singles when Lalovic was forced to medically retire from his match midway through the first set, giving Opacic the win.
Utah State made it a 3-0 match when Carvajal took the 6-1, 6-2 win over Heslin on court two. The match was decided when Acosta was able to outlast Blancaneaux at the No. 4 spot, securing the 7-5, 6-3 victory.
Boise State was in serious contention in the other three unfinished matches when play was stopped. Arca Costas was in a third set on court one (6-2, 2-6, 1-3), DeMulling appeared to be on his way to a positive result at No. 3 (6-3, 4-6, 1-1) and Stenlund was closing in on forcing a third set (4-6, 6-6) on court six.
The Broncos will now travel to Fresno, Calif. next week and compete at the Mountain West Championships, set for April 25-27.
