Boise State won their 30th game of the season, defeating Idaho State 5-3 and 8-0 on the day
BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State softball team defeated Idaho State in both games of a doubleheader, Tuesday at Dona Larsen Park. The Broncos edged the Bengals 5-3 in the first game of the day, before winning the second game handily in five innings, 8-0.
The win improves the Broncos to 30-9 on the season. This is the fastest Boise State has reached 30 wins in a season, surpassing last year's team – who accomplished the feat in 43 games.
Boise State will be back in action this weekend, hosting Nevada for three games, April 26-28.
GAME ONE
The Broncos opened the day by scoring in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Bradie Fillmore, but had to score four runs in the fourth and fifth innings for the 5-3 victory over Idaho State.
Idaho State (15-24) scored in the top of the fourth on a bases-loaded walk to take a 2-1 lead over the Broncos. Kelsey Broadus would pitch Boise State out of the inning without giving up any further damage, by forcing a groundout to Fillmore at third base.
Serena Huchingson doubled along the left field line past the out-stretched glove of the Bengals' third baseman to send Fillmore home from second and advance Alison Seng to third base. A single to the shortstop by Karlee Johnson brought up Seng, while Huchingson reached home on a throwing error on a double steal attempt – executed by Johnson.
Fillmore would single for her second RBI of the day in the bottom of the fifth to bring Rebekah Cervantes home from third for Boise State's fifth run of the day. Idaho State would add a run on a RBI double in the sixth, but it wouldn't be enough.
Despite the three runs given up in the game, Broadus was dominant in the circle. The junior left-hander struck out a season-high 11 batters in the complete game effort.
GAME TWO
Boise State again got good pitching in the second game of the day. Starter Gianna Mancha allowed only a single walk on the day, pitching 5.0 shutout innings. Only four Idaho State batters would reach base in the game, as the Broncos put together a solid defensive effort.
The offense did enough to score eight runs in the second game for a five-inning victory. Fillmore homered for the fourth-straight game, as the Broncos jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Cervantes hit a ball to the second baseman earlier in the inning, but the throw home to try and stop a streaking Wad was not in time.
A four-run bottom of the third provided the Broncos with the final effort needed to jump to the 8-0 lead. Wade would bat in two runs in the game, while finishing the day a combined 4-for-7. Huchingson (4-for-5) and Fillmore (4-for-4) would also finish the day with solid showings at the plate.
