Broncos Close out Nonconference with 4-0 Shutout of Thunderbirds

9/22/2019 5:03:00 PM | Women's Soccer

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Boise State women's soccer team took care of business in its final nonconference match of the year, defeating Southern Utah 4-0, Sunday afternoon. The Broncos head into conference play at 8-1, with their lone loss coming at home in double-overtime against Utah.

"Top to bottom, to me a very pragmatic win that we will be very very proud of," said head coach Jim Thomas.

Senior McKenna Kynett led the way for the Broncos, scoring two goals, her second and third of the season. Kynett's first goal came fed to her by Mikayla Schacktell, she sent it home to give Boise State a 2-0 lead that it carried into halftime. Kynett scored her second goal in the 52nd minute, this time off an assist by fellow senior Raimee Sherle.

"She [McKenna] has matured a lot over the last couple of weeks," explained Thomas. "She has gone through a little bit of an evolution as a player realizing what value she has to the squad in ways other than points."

Sherle added to her hot start to the season with a goal and an assist. Her goal came unassisted thanks to a free kick in the second minute. She now has seven goals on the year, bringing her career total to 52. Sherle also facilitated for her teammates, recording her fifth assist of the season on Kynett's second goal of the day.

Coach Thomas continued to lean on a strong reserve crew which has provided meaningful minutes throughout matches this season. Midfielder Jazel Bowers capitalized on those minutes this weekend, recording two assists Friday and nailing home her first-career collegiate goal, Sunday, in the 72nd minute off of a feed by Ashleigh Harrison. A redshirt junior, Harrison now has two assists on the year.

"A great performance from a lot of different players," said Thomas. "Whenever we get a performance from a deeper set of players than 14 or 15 I feel like second halves are a completely different entity for us."

Keeper Sydney Smith made two saves en route to recording her sixth clean sheet in nine starts this season. She has allowed just four goals in nine games and was second in the league in save percentage coming into Sunday's match.

Boise State now prepares for conference play following a historic start to the 2019 season. With Sunday's victory the Broncos finished nonconference with the best record in school history.

The Blue and Orange open Mountain West play with a split weekend starting on the road at Nevada, Friday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m. MT, before returning to Boise to host UNLV, Sunday, Sept. 29, 1 p.m. MT, at Boas Soccer Complex.
