India Kelly and Bradie Fillmore each had four hits on the day, with Fillmore driving in three runs and Kelly two. Kelly would also score three times in the win over Santa Clara.
Boise State (7-5) will play twice more Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. MT against Cal Baptist with the second game scheduled for 3 p.m. MT against Canisius.
"We had a tough start to the day but rebounded well with our bats and had an outstanding pitching performance by Kelsey Broadus. I'm proud of our efforts to bounce back," said Boise State head coach Maggie Huffaker.
Boise State 9, Santa Clara 0 (6)
The Broncos took out the frustrations of their earlier loss to North Dakota on Santa Clara, pounding out 13 hits while ace Kelsey Broadus racked up a season-high 12 strikeouts in the 9-0, six-inning win.
Broadus came up just one strikeout shy of her career high of 13 set in 2018 against Utah Valley. She retired 13-straight Santa Clara hitters at one point in the contest, while allowing just one runner to reach second base all game. That came in the sixth inning, when Santa Clara's Kaitlyn Anderson was hit by a pitch then advanced to third on a one-out single by Liyah Lopez.
Five Broncos had two hits each in the win, led by Kelsey Lalor's two doubles. Bradie Fillmore went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and India Kelly had two singles and scored three runs.
Kelly scored on Jessica McKay's grounder to second in the first, and Lalor came across in the second on a Serena Huchingson sacrifice fly to put Boise State up 2-0 early. The Broncos took advantage of a Santa Clara miscue in the fourth, as Kelly was safe and Huchingson scored on a two-out fielding error. Ashlyn Adams followed with a double to right-center which plated the speedy Kelly from first.
Boise State got two more in the fifth when Lalor's second double of the game brought in Karlee Johnson, then, three batters later and with runners at the corners, Huchingson stayed in a rundown long enough on a double-steal attempt with two outs to allow pinch-runner Emily Alandt to score from third.
The game entered mercy-rule territory in the sixth, as the Broncos put three across to make it 9-0. With two on and one out, Fillmore singled sharply up the middle. Anderson, in center for Santa Clara, tried to make the quick scoop-and-throw to get Kelly trying to score from second, but had the ball scoot under her glove and to the wall. Kelly and Adams scored easily, and Fillmore turned on the afterburners to get all the way around.
North Dakota 8, Boise State 5 (8)
Boise State was three outs away from opening the 2020 Silicon Valley Classic with a win, but a game-tying home run and a seven-run eighth inning from North Dakota sent the Broncos to an 8-5 extra-inning loss in Santa Clara.
Trailing 8-1 entering the bottom half of the eighth, Boise State (6-5) rallied for four runs, highlighted by a two-run single from India Kelly, and brought the tying run to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded. But Karlee Johnson, facing Fighting Hawks reliever Jannay Jones, grounded to second to end the contest.
Bradie Fillmore's first-inning RBI double held up through six innings, as Bronco starter Hannah Bailey benefited from a pair of key double plays to hold the 1-0 lead. But the lead was erased with one swing of the bat from North Dakota's Dani Romero, who led off the seventh with a solo shot to left.
Bailey, as she had each of the previous six innings, quickly retired the side after surrendering a hit. The Broncos had a chance to walk it off in the seventh as Kelly opened the inning with a pinch-hit single then went to second on Autumn Bennett's sacrifice bunt.
But North Dakota starter Nikki Pica got out of her second tight jam of the game, getting Ashlyn Adams to fly to left then popping up Karlee Johnson to end the threat.
The Fighting Hawks (4-7) seized the momentum in the eighth. Lauren Feld drove in Kawena Kalani to put North Dakota up a run, and the lead got to 4-1 before Jocelyn Kirk delivered the fatal blow with a grand slam to right-center.
Boise State left 10 runners on in the contest, including ending two innings with the bases loaded. The Broncos had a chance to break the game open in the third, when Adams, Johnson, and Jessica McKay each singled to load the bases with none out. But the Broncos would come away empty-handed, as Fillmore flied out, Kelsey Lalor grounded into a fielder's choice which forced Adams out at the plate, and Alison Seng grounded to second.
Bailey fell to 1-2 on the season, going 7.1 innings and giving up eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits. At the plate, Kelly went 2-for-2 with two RBIs off the bench, while Fillmore went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in, and Johnson was 2-for-5.
