Boise State Wins Two on Saturday Over Cal Baptist and Canisius

2/22/2020 1:30:00 PM | Softball

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Boise State softball won a pair of games Saturday afternoon in Santa Clara, Calif., by shutout first defeating Cal Baptist 8-0 in six innings, then followed with a 3-0 victory over Canisius. Boise State was led by solid pitching with Kelsey Broadus picking up the first win, while Micaela Leal won the second, both pitched complete games.

"The two team wins today we're a big deal for us to get some momentum going," said head coach Maggie Huffaker. "We had great outings from both Kelsey Broadus and Mickey Leal, and I was really pleased with India Kelly in the leading spot today."

Bradie Fillmore and Autumn Bennett both hit .667 and had four hits each on Saturday with Fillmore tallying three RBIs and Bennett two. Alison Seng hit .600 with five hits and had a team-high 15 putouts.

The Broncos are 3-1 at the Silicon Valley Classic and 9-5 overall with an encounter versus the Cal Poly Mustangs on the schedule for Sunday morning in Santa Clara.

CAL BAPTIST RECAP
Bradie Fillmore slammed her first home run of the season to highlight a seven-run fourth inning, and Kelsey Broadus tossed a one-hitter as Boise State improved to 2-1 at the Silicon Valley Classic with an 8-0, six-inning win over Cal Baptist Saturday morning.

The Broncos (8-5) blew a scoreless game wide open with seven runs on eight hits in the top of the fourth. Singles from Jessica McKay, Kelsey Lalor, and Alison Seng loaded the bases with none out, and Karlee Johnson opened the scoring with a comebacker off of Lancer starter Amanda Hernandez which brought in McKay.

Cal Baptist brought in Kerisa Viramontes for Hernandez, and Autumn Bennett welcomed her to the game with a base hit into right which plated Lalor and Seng. India Kelly's grounder to first drove in Johnson to make it 4-0, then Bennett would come in a batter later on Ashlyn Adams' single to left.

That set the table for Fillmore, who crushed a 3-2 Viramontes offering deep and out to left to cap the seven-run frame and open her home run account for 2020.

Bella Rocco gave the Broncos the eight-run lead in the sixth with an RBI double to right that scored Bennett.

Fillmore and Bennett would each finish with two hits and a pair of runs driven in, with McKay and Seng contributing a pair of singles apiece.

Broadus cruised to 6-0 on the season with her fourth shutout of the campaign, and second in as many games. Following her 12-strikeout effort Friday night against host Santa Clara, Broadus set six Lancers down on strikes Saturday morning, and retired the first six before a leadoff walk in the third spoiled the perfect outing. She would take the no-hit bid into the fourth, until a one-out single from Mackenzie Budinger provided the only blemish on Broadus' outing.

Boise State will face Canisius at 3 p.m. to close Saturday's action.

CANISIUS RECAP
Boise State's defense picked up where if left off against Cal Baptist when the Broncos faced the Golden Griffins of Canisius later Saturday afternoon. Micaela Leal was on the mound and pitched a completed game shutout. In seven innings Leal allowed five hits with one strikeout and one walk as her teammates backed her up with solid defense.

After two innings of scoreless ball, the Broncos struck for two runs in the bottom of the third. Fillmore brought Kelly home first when she singled up the middle. McKay then sent a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Adams to cross the plate from third.

Boise State extended its lead to three in the fifth inning when Rocco reached base on a fielder's choice where the defensive play went to the plate in an attempt to tag out McKay who beat the play for the final run.

Kelly, Fillmore and Bennett each tallied two hits in the game, while Adams, Seng and Lalor all recorded one apiece.
