ABOUT THE BRONCOS
FORECAST: Boise State features an experienced veteran team this spring that should challenge for the Mountain West title.
Â
WHAT'S BACK: The Broncos return six letterwinners from a team that went 7-6 in 2020 including four All-MW honorees Simon Arca Costas, Blake Bayldon, Wyatt DeMulling and Kyryll Kryvchun. The foursome combined for 70 singles victories last season and an overall mark of 70-36.
Â
Kryvchun, who was an All-MW singles honoree, led Boise State with a team-high of 22 victories, which includes going 8-4 mark at the No. 1 position in duals. The 2019 transfer student debuted for Boise State as the lone Bronco to reach the 20-win plateau in last year's shortened season. The redshirt-junior also tallied a 14-8 doubles record last year.
Â
DeMulling also earned All-MW Singles accolades in 2020 going 17-7 overall on the year and 8-3 in duals play splitting time between the top-three positions. He enters the campaign with a career record of 51-32, he has the most wins on the team and is 18 short of the program's top-20 list for career victories.
Â
Bayldon and Arca Costas received All-MW Doubles honors after compiling a 14-2 record last year, including a 7-2 record while playing at the No. 1 position during dual competitions.
Â
On the year, Bayldon tallied a team-best 21-5 overall doubles mark and went 8-3 in duals. He also recorded a singles record of 16-12 overall, tied for third-most wins on the team.
Â
Arca Costas is a redshirt-sophomore who is coming off a season where he went a team-second-best 20-6 in doubles and 8-3 in duals. The Spaniard's singles record was a solid 16-9, splitting time between the two through four positions. Arca Costas enters the year with a 40-20 career mark in singles and 29-15 in doubles.
Â
The other two returners from 2019-20 are redshirt-junior Luka Soskic, who did not see action last year because of injury, and redshirt-freshman Michael Bott. Bott joined the team in January 2020 and went 5-5 in singles and 5-6 in doubles.
Meanwhile, Soskic enters the year with a singles career record (at Boise State) of 12-4 and a doubles mark of 7-7. He was also a 2019 All-MW Singles honoree.
Â
WHAT'S NEW: The Broncos welcome three newcomers to the family for the 2021 spring campaign including two transfers and one true-freshman.
Â
Lawrence Sciglitano, a redshirt-sophomore, comes from George Washington University after two seasons in the District of Columbia. The Melbourne, Australia native, recorded a 22-14 singles record at GWU and went a team-best 6-1 last spring before the season ended abruptly.
Â
Lukas Ridemar's name may sound familiar to some, the redshirt-sophomore is a transfer from Idaho State where he played No. 1 in both singles and doubles for the Bengals. The native of Hollviken, Sweden, comes to Boise State with a 20-17 overall mark in singles and 21-11 in doubles. He reached the ITA Mountain Region quarterfinals for doubles in October of 2019.
Â
The lone true freshman was born in Boise and comes back to town from Plano, Texas. Caden Moortgat is the son of former Boise State men's and women's head coach Jim Moortgat (1996-2002) and the brother of former Bronco women's tennis player Camryn (2018-20). Moortgat is a six-time Texas 6A All-State honoree and a two-time state doubles champion.
Â
THE MAN IN CHARGE: Kristian Widen enters his third year in charge of the men's program at Boise State where he has recorded back-to-back winning seasons with a combined record of 18-16. Widen has been a part of seven conference championships at Boise State, three as a player and four as an assistant coach.
