Haas won the red flight singles main draw while Moortgat took the white flight consolation singles title at Gonzaga over the weekend.
SPOKANE, Wash. - Boise State men's tennis completed the fall campaign with Jesse Haas and Caden Moorgat winning singles titles at the Gonzaga Bulldog Invitational in Spokane, Wash., over the weekend (Oct. 29-31). Overall, the Broncos finished the tournament with a combined 11-5 singles mark and went 2-2 in doubles, including an appearance in the doubles final.
"This weekend was a very solid one for the Broncos, ending with a great record with two singles titles and a runner-up result in doubles," said head coach Kristian Widen. "Every single guy showed up on all three days and competed at a very high level. All in all, this was our best tournament of the fall, it was nice to see the guys compete at this level for three tough days. For the past month we have worked hard and focused on getting healthy from nagging injuries. I am excited for our spring season which starts in early January."
Haas went 4-0 at the tournament on his way to winning the red flight's main draw singles championship. The native of Idaho Falls, Idaho, opened with a dominating straight-set win over Portland State's Andrew Vu 6-2, 6-1, then followed with a hard fought three set victory 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 over Montana State's Marcos Zelver in the quarterfinal. The senior then swept Alejandro Salvador from Idaho 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals before dispatching Montana's Pontus Hallgren 6-4, 7-6(5) for the title.
Moortgat finished the weekend at 3-1 overall. It was a solid effort for the sophomore from Plano, Texas, who rallied after dropping his opening match in three sets 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2 to Idaho's Mario Duron. The Bronco came back to win three consecutive straight-set contests to bring home the consolation singles title of the white flight. His run started with a 6-4, 6-2 dismantling of Montana's Guillermo Martin, which was followed up with a 6-0, 7-5 semifinal win over Manuel Monteiro from Montana State. In the final, the sophomore defeated Eastern Washington's Erik Sarlvik 6-3, 6-4 to claim his first career collegiate championship.
"Jesse Haas went 4-0 and captured the top spot in his singles draw and is now undefeated in D1 (NCAA DI) play" said Widen. "I'm very proud of him, coming back from surgery and playing in his first tournament in two years. Caden had a tough three-set loss in his first round, but bounced back to win the backdraw. It was great to see them play so well."
Ryo Minakata had a strong outing as well reaching the main draw semifinal of the white flight. Minakata opened in the round of 16 with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory over Montana's Milo Benn, then followed up with a 6-2, 7-5 win in the quarterfinals over Tommy Hsu of Portland State. He then fell in two sets 6-3, 7-5 to Pablo Gomez Galvan from Gonzaga in the semis.
Two other Broncos competed as well in Spokane. Kyryll Kryvchun went 1-1 in the blue flight winning his opener 7-5, 6-4 over Nikolas Tvedt of Portland.
Jan Lucca Marquardt went 1-2 at the invite. Marquardt dropped his opener before regrouping to beat Montana's Lawrence Sciglitano 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) as he rallied from a set down to claim the consolation quarterfinal win.
In doubles action, the tandem of Kryvchun and Minakata went 2-1 reaching the final of the blue flight before falling. They defeated Eastern Washington's Manuel Balce and Bruno Ortega 8-4 in the quarterfinals, then Idaho's duo of Bruno Casino and Francisco Bascon 8-6 to advance to the final. The Bronco pair then fell 8-5 in the title match to Portland's Julien Penzlin and Nikolas Tvedt.
That concludes the fall schedule for the Boise State men's tennis team as the Broncos turn their attention to preparing for the spring team dual season.
