BOSTON – The Boise State men's distance squad opened the 2021-22 indoor track and field season in record-setting fashion, as all 14 student-athletes achieved personal bests at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston, Saturday.
"This was an awesome performance," said Boise State Track and Field Head Coach Corey Ihmels. "Despite a disappointing ending to their cross country season, the men never wavered and stayed on course. They were fantastic today, and I am excited to see what is ahead for this group in the new year.
Senior Dario De Caro highlighted the Broncos' historic evening, shattering a 15-year-old school record in the men's 5,000-meters. His time of 13:38.47 bested Forest Braden's 2006 mark by nearly ten seconds (13:47.73).
"Dario's run puts him atop the all-time list with elite company," said Ihmels. "We are all very happy for him and all the hard work he has put in this year."
Also, in the men's 5,000m, senior Jonathan Shields (13:51.82) and freshman Ahmed Ibrahim (14:02.60) ran the fourth and fifth fastest times in Boise State history.
In the men's 3,000m, seniors Henry Mong and Hunter Lucas and freshman Aidan Roberts all secured top-15 finishes. Mong led the way, earning an eighth-place finish with a time of 8:08.12, followed by Lucas and Roberts who placed 13th and 15th, respectively.
Next, the sprinters and jumpers round out the 2021 calendar year at the Spokane Invitational, Dec. 11.
