Heartbreak Saturday in Las Vegas for Softball

UNLV Rebels handed Boise State a pair of losses after scoring game winners in the bottom of the seventh each time.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Boise State softball had a frustrating afternoon at Las Vegas on Saturday dropping a pair of conference opening games to UNLV in the seventh inning. Boise State rallied in the first game to tie the score in the sixth at 1-1 only to see UNLV win it in the seventh 2-1. The second game saw the Broncos storm out to a 3-0 lead in the first and then extend a 4-3 lead to 5-3 in the top of the seventh, just to watch the Rebels bring three runs across the plate in the bottom half.

The losses drop Boise State to 5-11 overall and 0-2 in league with the third game of the series schedule for Sunday afternoon. 

Ashlyn Adams led the team offensively with three hits while batting .429 on the day scoring one run with an RBI. Bella Rocco hit a team-best .667 for two hits, one run and three RBI. Abby Bumcrot and Autumn Bennett each recorded two hits, Bennett also scored one run. Ashlyn Whalen hit a 2 run RBI in the second game. 


GAME 1 RECAP
The conference opener was a low scoring affair with UNLV taking it 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Boise State had four hits, two by Bumcrot and one each by Bennett and Adams, while UNLV had eight hits.

UNLV opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning getting one run across the plate. Boise State rallied to tie the score in the top of the six inning. Allsion Seng reached base on a walk, then advanced to third when Bennett doubled to right center. Seng came home when Adams singled to left field.

With the score tied at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, UNLV struck for one score on a Boise State fielder's choice to win it 2-1.


GAME 2 RECAP
Boise State stormed out of the gate with three runs in the first inning, then held onto the lead until the seventh when the Rebels rallied to win it with three scores. The Broncos had eight hits in the second game, two each by Adams and Rocco, while Bennett, Whalen, Kelsey Lalor and India Kelly all tallied one. 

The Blue and Orange opened the game quickly. With two out in the top of the first, Bennett reached on a single to right, then advanced to second on an Adams ground out. She crossed the plate from second when Rocco singled to left. The next batter was Whalen who sent a two RBI homer to center field.

UNLV cut into its deficit in the bottom of the first with one run scoring. 

The Broncos stretched their advantage back to three in the top of the third when Adams doubled down the right field line, then came home when Rocco singled to center to make it 4-1 Boise State.

UNLV rallied again with one run in the bottom of the fourth and another in the fifth to make it 4-3 Broncos. Boise State answered with a run in the top of the seventh to make it 5-3 in favor of the visitors when Seng scored from third on a Rocco sacrifice fly to center.

Down two heading into the bottom of the seventh, UNLV loaded the bases and eventually brought three runs across the plate to win it 6-5.
