Broncos Down Spartans, Sweep Weekend

3/21/2021 4:38:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State women's soccer finished off a perfect 2-0 weekend series with a 1-0 victory over the San Jose State Spartans, Sunday at Boas Soccer Complex.

It took 76 minutes for the ball to find the back of the net in a match where the Broncos outshot the Spartans (0-4-1, 0-4-1 MW) 19-3. The lone goal in the match came off a putback by junior Macie Nelson following a save on a penalty kick by sophomore Morgan Stone.

"I think on Sundays, it's really difficult to be exact in front of goal and you can see that we weren't quite crisp enough for the opportunities that came our way," said head coach Jim Thomas. "Luckily we found a way to force the issue enough and get pulled down in the box. I feel like the penalty kick was a microcosm of the game, you know even that didn't go in easily. But that is not a surprise to me when it comes to playing against these guys, it's always like that."

For Nelson, a defender, that was her first goal of the season and the second of her career. The assist goes to Stone for her first of the year.

"She [Nelson] does a lot for us to keep us in games, so it's nice for her to get the opportunity to separate and win us the game," said Thomas. "I think we rely on her for a lot, set pieces', corners, restarts those kinds of things and obviously her play at the back. You want the game to reward players who give as much as she does and so it's a pretty fun moment."

Boise State split goalkeeping duties in the match with freshman Genevieve Crenshaw getting the start in net and junior Sydney Smith taking over at the half and earning the win. The victory moves Smith into sole possession of sixth place in program history with 20.

"She's [Crenshaw] done very, very, very well," said Nelson. "She started this game and then Sydney [Smith] came [in], she's the usual keeper we have been going with so it was a good smooth switch, I felt pretty confident in both of them."

The Broncos improved to 3-1-1 on the year and currently sit on a three-game winning streak. The schedule now flips as the Broncos will host travel partner Nevada next Saturday, March 27 at Boas Soccer Complex. This will be the second match between the Broncos and the Wolf Pack in the last three weeks.
