THIS WEEK FOR THE BRONCOS

WHAT IS NEXT: Boise State (5-12) is off to Provo, Utah, to face BYU in a doubleheader Friday starting at 2:30 p.m. (Mountain), followed by a single contest on Saturday versus Southern Utah at 1 p.m. (MT), all games will be played at BYU's Gail Miller Field.

At this time there will be no live stream or live stats for the Southern Utah game on Saturday. BOISE STATE VERSUS THE FIELD: The Broncos are a combined 10-6 versus BYU and Southern Utah all-time. They are 1-4 against the Cougars which includes a 5-1 victory over BYU last year at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif. Boise State leads the series versus Southern Utah by a 9-2 margin with the last meeting between the two coming on March 3, 2018 in St. George, Utah, a 10-1 five inning win for the Broncos. .
    
SCOUTING BOISE STATE: Boise State opened Mountain West Conference play last weekend at Las Vegas where they fell three times to UNLV to move to 5-12 overall and 0-3 in league. As a team Boise State hits .214 (MW 8th), has an ERA of 3.88 (MW 5th) and fielding percentage of .980 (MW 1st). The Broncos return seven position starters and two pitchers from the 2020 campaign that saw the Broncos go 14-11. In addition, they welcomed back 13 veterans while adding two transfers and eight freshmen. Among the returners are two All-Mountain West honorees in Karlee Johnson and Alison Seng. This year's Boise State team was picked to place fourth out of nine teams in the 2021 league race.

SCOUTING BYU: The Cougars are coming off a 3-2 week in Texas where they beat Sam Houston State (12-2), UTSA (11-2) and Tarleton State (7-1) with losses to Texas State (2-1) and No. 10 Texas (10-7). As a team they hit .267 (WCC 1st), have a team ERA of  3.85 (WCC 1st) and a team fielding percentage of .959 (WCC 1st). BYU returned 10 position starters and 15 letterwinners from its 2020 squad that went 14-9 overall before the season was halted in mid-March. The Cougars were picked to win the West Coast Conference in 2021 out of six teams.
  
SCOUTING SOUTHERN UTAH: The SUU Thunderbirds are 7-15 overall entering the week and went 3-2 last week at the Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix. Southern Utah went 5-14 in 2020 when the season was halted in mid-March. The Big Sky coaches picked the Thunderbirds to place sixth out of seven teams in the Big Sky race.
  

ABOUT THE BRONCOS

HEAD COACH HUFFAKER: Boise State is in its third season under the guidance of Maggie Huffaker who has recorded a 55-39 overall record with the Broncos. Some of Huffaker's accomplishments at Boise State include: one NCAA Regional appearance and one NCAA regional championship appearance; two winning seasons; student-athletes have earned three NFCA All-Region honors and eight All-MW accolades. Academically, her team has earned one NFCA Academic Team Award, nine NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete accolades, 29 Academic All-MW and 20 MW Scholar-Athlete (3.5 or better cumulative GPA) honors.
 
BRONCO LEADERS: Ashlyn Adams is hitting a team-high .340 with 118 hits, six runs and five RBI. Bella Rocco is next hitting .275 with 11 hits, three runs and team-high eight RBI. Alison Seng follows hitting .261 with 12 hits, five runs and three RBI. Kelsey Lalor is hitting a .235 with 12 hits, five runs, three home runs and six RBI. Hannah Bailey leads the pitching staff with a 1.98

MULTIPLE HITS: Ashlyn Adams leads the Broncos with six multiple hits games this season, followed by Alison Seng and Kelsey Lalor with four each.

HITTING STREAKS: Ashlyn Adams has an active five-game hitting streak going and is tied for the lead overall with Bella Rocco. 

ACTIVE REACHED BASE STREAKS: Ashlyn Adams has an active 11-game streak going in which she has reached base, followed by Alison Seng with eight and Kelsey Lalor with three.  

ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST HONOREES BACK: Leading the team this year are two 2020 All-MW honorees in Karlee Johnson and Alison Seng. The duo started all 25 games in 2020 combining for 52 hits, 24 runs, 29 RBI and three home runs. Defensively, they combined for 205 putouts.
 
WHAT IS BACK: Boise State returned 13 members of the 2020 squad, including seven starters and two pitchers. Starters back include: short stop Karlee Johnson (25 hits, 11 runs, 2 home runs, 16 RBI), first baseman Alison Seng (27 hits, 13 runs, 1 home run, 13 RBI), outfielder Ashlyn Adams (23 hits, 17 runs, 2 home runs, 13 RBI), catcher Serena Huchingson (18 hits, 11 runs, 2 home runs, 14 RBI), outfielder Kelsey Lalor (19 hits, 16 runs, 4 home runs, 14 RBI), second baseman Autumn Bennett (16 hits, 13 runs, 1 home run, 5 RBI) and third baseman/designated player Bella Rocco (16 hits, 4 runs, 2 home runs, 14 RBI).
 
PITCHERS BACK: Hannah Bailey is the leading pitcher back from 2020. She pitched in 42.1 innings in 13 appearances with an ERA of 4.46, 26 strikeouts and eight walks. Jordan Schuring also returns after seeing limited time in 2020.
 
NATIONALLY RANKED RECRUITING CLASS: This year's freshmen class was ranked 27th nationally by Extra Inning Softball. In all, Boise State added two transfers and eight freshmen to the core group of veterans. The transfers include pitchers Sara Johnson (Towson) and Kiele Miller (Creighton).
