THIS WEEK FOR THE BRONCOS

WHAT IS NEXT: Boise State (7-13, 0-3 MW) will be home for the first time in 697 days when it hosts the San Diego State Aztecs (14-9, 2-4 MW) in Mountain West Conference action this weekend at Dona Larsen Park. The action begins Friday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. (Mountain), with the second game tentatively scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The three-game home series concludes with a single game on Saturday with first pitch at 12 p.m. (MT). 

BOISE STATE VERSUS SAN DIEGO STATE: The Broncos and Aztecs have met 24 times previously, all in MW play, with SDSU holding a 14-10 advantage in the series. The Aztecs also lead the series in games played at Boise and at San Diego, both by a 7-5 margins. The Broncos won the last series they played versus SDSU in 2019 at Boise 2-1 and the last game by a 16-1 score in five innings.

LIMITED SPECTATORS: Seating capacity at Dona Larsen Park is set at 200 (bleachers and outfield combined) for this weekend. Tickets may be purchased at the athletic ticket office on campus or at Dona Larsen Park the day of. COVID-19 protocols will be enforced with masks and social distancing being mandatory.

SCOUTING BOISE STATE: Boise State enters the week at 7-13 overall and 0-3 in MW play. The Broncos are coming off a 2-1 weekend at Provo, Utah, last week where they split with BYU (W 6-4, L 4-1) and beat Southern Utah 3-0. As a team Boise State hits .209 (MW 8th), has an ERA of 3.65 (MW 5th) and fielding percentage of .981 (MW 1st).

The Broncos return seven position starters and two pitchers from the 2020 campaign that saw the Broncos go 14-11. In addition, they welcomed back 13 veterans while adding two transfers and eight freshmen. Among the returners are two All-Mountain West honorees in Karlee Johnson and Alison Seng. This year's Boise State team was picked to place fourth out of nine teams in the 2021 league race.

SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE: The Aztecs are coming off a 1-2 week at home where they defeated UNLV 7-6 (10), and lost to the Rebels 1-0 and 5-3 (9) in MW play. As a team the Aztecs hit .256 (MW 4th), have a team ERA of  3.47 (MW 4th) and a team fielding percentage of .972 (MW 4th). San Diego State was picked third in the Preseason Mountain West Coaches Poll. 

 

ABOUT THE BRONCOS

HEAD COACH HUFFAKER: Boise State is in its third season under the guidance of Maggie Huffaker who has recorded a 57-40 overall record with the Broncos. Some of Huffaker's accomplishments at Boise State include: one NCAA Regional appearance and one NCAA regional championship appearance; two winning seasons; student-athletes have earned three NFCA All-Region honors and eight All-MW accolades. Academically, her team has earned one NFCA Academic Team Award, nine NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete accolades, 29 Academic All-MW and 20 MW Scholar-Athlete (3.5 or better cumulative GPA) honors.
 
BRONCO LEADERS: Ashlyn Adams is hitting a team-high .339 with 21 hits, eight runs and seven RBI. Alison Seng follows hitting .250 with 14 hits, five runs and five RBI. Bella Rocco is next hitting .245 with 12 hits, three runs and team-high (tied) eight RBI. Kelsey Lalor is hitting a .237 with 14 hits, six runs, four home runs and seven RBI. Hannah Bailey leads the pitching staff with a 2.14 ERA and 36 strikeouts, while Sara Johnson has a 3.69 ERA and 40 strikeouts.

MULTIPLE HITS: Ashlyn Adams leads the Broncos with seven multiple hits games this season, followed by Alison Seng with five and Kelsey Lalor with four.

HITTING STREAKS: Jordyn Hutchins has the longest active hitting streak in consecutive games going with three. Ashlyn Adams has the longest this season at seven which ended last weekend versus BYU. 

ACTIVE REACHED BASE STREAKS: Ashlyn Adams has an active 14-game streak going in which she has reached base, followed by Kelsey Lalor with six.
