Boise State Splits at New Mexico

4/24/2021 9:06:00 PM | Softball

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  - Jordyn Hutchins led Boise State to a split at New Mexico Saturday afternoon going 5-for-7 with one home run and team-high five RBI. New Mexico rallied to win the first game of the Mountain West Conference doubleheader with a walk-off grand slam in the seventh for a 6-4 win. Boise State regrouped for a 4-3 victory in the second game behind a pair of two RBI homers from Hutchins and Karlee Johnson.

The split moved Boise State to 18-17 overall and  9-5 in MW play. The third game of the series will take place Sunday afternoon in Albuquerque.

Hannah Bailey was given the loss in game one, then came back to earn her seventh win of the season in game two. She recorded six strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched with two walks, giving up six hits and three runs.

Hutchins led eight Broncos who registered at least one hit on the day, she had five with one homer. Karlee Johnson and Ashlyn Adams each had three hits with Johnson tallying a home run and Adams a double. Bobbiann Pratt and Autumn Bennett each recorded two hits, while Hailey Hayes, Bella Rocco and Kelsey Lalor each tallied one.

"Today's first game was a tough loss, but I'm proud of the bounce back win," said head coach Maggie Huffaker. "Jordyn Hutchins stepped up again big time for us, and Karlee Johnson getting us on the board was huge."

GAME ONE RECAP: New Mexico 6, Boise State 4
Boise State surrendered a seventh inning walk-off grand slam in the opener to fall 6-4 to New Mexico. Boise State out hit the Lobos 12 to seven and led 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Eight Broncos recorded at least one hit led by Adams and Hutchins with three each as they both went 3-for-4 against the Lobo pitcher.

The Blue and Orange took the lead early with two runs in the top of the first. Lalor opened with a lead-off single to left, followed by Adams hitting an infield single to third base. The runners had advanced to second and third when Hutchins came to the plate. She singled up the middle scoring Lalor from third. Adams came home from third on a throwing error by the New Mexico catcher in an attempt to catch Hutchins stealing second.

After New Mexico had tied the game up in the bottom of the third, Boise State answered in the top of the seventh. Adams sent a one-out double down the right line. Rocco then singled to right field, advancing Adams to third. Clarissa Moreno entered as a pinch runner for Rocco and proceeded to steal second. With runners on second and third, Hutchins singled up the middle bringing both runners home for a 4-2 lead.

That set up the bottom of the seventh when with the bases loaded and one out, Cameryness O'Grady sent a walk-off grand slam over the center field fence for the 6-4 victory.

GAME TWO RECAP: Boise State 4, New Mexico 3
Like the first game, Boise State scored two runs early to take the lead, this time in the second frame. Once again New Mexico came back and took a 3-2 advantage with a big fourth inning, only to see the Broncos rally for the win in the sixth.

Hannah Bailey picked up her seventh win of the season after coming in out of the bullpen in relief with the Broncos trailing 3-2 in the fourth. Bailey and starting pitcher Sara Johnson combined for 11 strikeouts, six by Bailey and five by Johnson.

Boise State tallied six hits to UNM's seven with Hutchins and Karlee Johnson leading the team with two apiece, including a two RBI homer each.

The Broncos opened the scoring in the top of the second with two runs. With two out, Alison Seng reached on a walk. She was brought home when Karlee Johnson hit her first home run of the season, a two RBI shot over the left field fence.

Down two in the bottom of the fourth, the Lobos rallied for three in the inning powered by four-consecutive doubles.

Trailing by one heading into the sixth, Boise State came back with the game winning runs. With one out, Autumn Bennett singled to right field. Hutchins was the next batter to step to the plate where she proceeded to hammer her sixth home run of the season over the center field wall for the go ahead runs.

The Bronco defense then stood strong as UNM left one runner stranded in the sixth and went three up and three down in the seventh as Boise State claimed the victory to even the series at one each.
