THIS WEEK IN BRONCO VOLLEYBALL
WHAT'S HAPPENING: Boise State (12-2, 1-1 MW) returns home for a pair of Mountain West matches during week two of league play. Visiting Boise this week are San Jose State (8-4, 2-0 MW) at 7 p.m. (Mountain) on Thursday followed by a 10 a.m. (MT) encounter with Nevada (3-10, 0-2 MW) on Saturday morning, both contests will be played in Bronco Gym.

FREE MATCH: With the time change for Saturday's match with Nevada from noon to 10 a.m. (MT) in Bronco Gym, Boise State will not charge for admission to that contest. 

SCOUTING BOISE STATE: The Broncos enter the week at 12-2 overall and winners of 10 of their last 11 matches. Last week the Broncos opened Mountain West Conference play on the road at Colorado State (L 3-0) and Wyoming (W 3-0).  

Through 14 matches, Boise State is led by Spring 2021 All-MW and 2021 Fall Preseason All-MW honoree Lauren Ohlinger who has recorded five double-doubles on the year and tallied team highs for kills (187), service aces (27) and points (225.0). Ohlinger leads the Mountain West in total kills, total service aces and total points. She is ranked eighth nationally for total service aces and 41st in total points.

Makayla Hansen follows with 130 kills and 56 blocks. Alyssa Wissinger is third with 85 kills and team-high 71 blocks, Kayly Pau is fourth with 76 kills and 27 blocks, while Alli O'Harra contributes 54 kills and 54 blocks.

As a team, Boise State hits .265 percent (1st MW / 27th NCAA) and holds opponents to .161 percent (3rd MW / 41st NCAA). The Broncos average 13.06 kills per set (4th MW), 2.84 blocks (1st MW / 10th NCAA), 2.12 service aces (2nd MW / 8th NCAA) and 13.70 digs (4th MW). Boise State is 10th nationally for total blocks (142.0) and seventh in total service aces (106). 

SCOUTING SAN JOSE STATE: The Spartans are 8-4 overall and tied for the lead in the conference standings at 2-0 after sweeping two at home last week defeating UNLV (W 3-0) and San Diego State (W 3-0). SJSU is led by Amethyst Harper with 142 kills and 21 blocks, followed by Haylee Nelson with 138 kills. As a team, the Spartans hit .219 percent (5th MW) while their opponents have hit .217 (8th MW). San Jose State was picked to place eight in the 2021 Mountain West race. 

THE SAN JOSE STATE SERIES:  Boise State leads the all-time series 21-18 and has won 18 of the last 20 meetings including the last four straight. The Broncos won both encounters last year at San Jose State and leads the series in contests played at San Jose by a slim 10-8 margin. Boise State also leads 10-8 in matches played at Boise and 19-16 in conference matches dating back to the Western Athletic Conference (2001-2010).

SCOUTING NEVADA: The Wolf Pack has struggled early on and enter the week at 3-10 overall and 0-2 in MW play. They lost two at home last weekend falling to San Diego State (L 3-0) and UNLV (L 3-0). Nevada is led by Reka Monteleone with 125 kills and 17 blocks, followed by Sydney Petersen who is ranked fifth in the MW for hitting percentage at .368 and has 104 kills. As a team, Nevada hits .146 percent (11th MW) while its opponents have hit .238 (11th MW). Nevada was picked to place 11th in the 2021 MW race.

THE NEVADA SERIES:  Boise State leads the all-time series 32-29 and has won 15 of the last 18 encounters. The Blue and Orange won both meetings last year at Reno and leads the series in contests played at Reno by a 18-15 margin. Boise State also leads 15-14 in matches played at Boise and 28-27 in conference matches dating back five conferences to the old Mountain West Athletic Conference (1987), Big Sky (1988-91), Big West (1996-00), WAC (2001-10), then to the MW (2021-present).

ADMISSION: The price for attending the matches remains the same as in past years: $6 for adults, $4 for juniors (high school age and younger) and seniors 62 or older. Boise State students with valid ID cards and children two and under get in for free. 

In addition, for the first time Boise State will be selling match tickets in advance for all volleyball home contests in 2021. Fans can purchase individual match tickets at the Boise State Ticket Office on the west side of Albertsons Stadium or via the internet at BroncoSports.com. 

Seating is limited with the east side bleachers closed for the season due to COVID safety protocols that are in place for the 2021 campaign. So purchase your tickets early.

BRONCO SPORTS PASS: Once again Boise State will be offering the Bronco Sports Pass this year for $75, which will grant admission to all home regular season events during the 2021-22 season for: women's basketball, gymnastics, soccer, softball, volleyball and track & field. Note: The Bronco Sports Pass does not include any conference tournaments or postseason national tournaments hosted by Boise State.

FACTS & NOTES: What To Know About Bronco Volleyball
MILLER NAMED MW FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Boise State's Jordan Miller was named Mountain West Freshman of the Week on Sept. 27 after leading the Broncos to a road split at Colorado State and Wyoming. In the win at Wyoming (Sept. 25), she led the Broncos with a career and team-high 15 kills while hitting a career-high .393 percent.

SCHOOL RECORD TYING START: Boise State is off to a school record tying start to a season at 12-2 overall after 14 contests. That mark is good for a three-way tie with the 1982 (12-2) and 2010 (13-2) teams.  

BRONCOS ARE SOLID AT HOME: Boise State is a combined 11-2 at home over the last two seasons 6-1 last spring and 5-1 this fall.  

TEAM DEPTH / CHANGING LINEUP: Boise State has one of its strongest teams in program history and has had the luxury to start 10 of its 17 student-athletes to date. Through 14 contests the Broncos have featured five different lineups. The most used lineup to date has been Ohlinger, Wissinger, Boss, Casillas, O'Harra and Hansen, this group has started together seven times.

BOSS RETURNS AT SETTER: Senior Danielle Boss returns at setter where she has started the previous three campaigns. She entered the season ranked ninth all-time and fifth in the rally scoring era (RSE) for career assists at Boise State with 2,151. She has opened the season with 400 to move into seventh place overall and fourth in RSE with 2,551.

THE BLUE WALL NATIONALLY RANKED: The Broncos' frontline has recorded double-digit team blocks in 10 of 14 contests to date with a high of 15 against CSUN (Sept. 10). The Broncos lead the Mountain West and are ranked 10th nationally in blocking with 142, the wall is 10th in the NCAA for blocks per set at 2.84. Anchoring the wall so far in 2021 are Alyssa Wissinger with 71 blocks, Makayla Hansen (56), Alli O'Hara (54), Kayly Pau (27), Lauren Ohlinger (22), Danielle Boss (17) and Jessica Donahue (12) who has just returned to the lineup playing on a limited basis over the last three weeks.

DONAHUE LOOKING FOR BLOCKS RECORD: Jessica Donahue enters the season with a chance to break the school record for career blocks. She currently stands at 385 good for eight place all-time and needs to reach 493 for the record. She sits in third during the rally scoring era, 15 short of tying for second. Donahue saw her first action of the season on Sept. 10 versus CSUN.

WISSINGER NATIONALLY RANKED FOR BLOCKS: Alyssa Wissinger is ranked eighth nationally for total blocks with 71 and 11th in blocks per set at 1.45.  

BOSS NATIONALLY RANKED FOR ASSISTS: Dani Boss is ranked 20th nationally for assists per set at 10.81, that is second in the MW.  

OHLINGER NATIONALLY RANKED: Lauren Ohlinger is ranked eighth in the NCAA for total service aces (27), 21st nationally for service aces per set (0.54) and 41st for total points (225.0).  

SHAWN GARUS: Boise State head coach Shawn Garus, in his 13th season with the program, currently stands at 218-150, his career record stands at 325-270 in his 21st year. Garus ranks second in total wins in program history, out of 10 coaches all-time. At Boise State, he has recorded nine winning seasons overall, including an active streak of six straight. He has three seasons (2010, 2015, 2016) with 20-plus wins.
