Â
WHAT'S NEXT: Boise State (7-2-1/1-0-1 MW) continues its opening Mountain West road stretch, traveling to play San Diego State (3-7-0/1-1-0 MW) on Oct. 1 and New Mexico (7-2-0/2-0-0 MW) on Oct. 3. The two matches are the tail end of a four-straight away from home for the Broncos who will be back in Boise Oct. 8 and Oct. 10 for matches against San Jose State and Fresno State.
Â
LAST TIME OUT: Boise State opened up MW play in the Silver State for matches against UNLV and Nevada. In Friday's contest against the Rebels, the Broncos exploded offensively in the second half to score two goals in under two minutes. Kelie Hansen assisted Dorian Goodwin for the opener, and less than a minute later Sophie Drown delivered a ball that was finished by fellow freshman Kenzie MacMillan. Sunday's match against Nevada ended in a 0-0 draw despite the Broncos generating 21 shots to the Wolf Pack's three.
Â
BIG TEST AHEAD: Up next for Boise State is what many consider its toughest road trip of the season as it travels to play the two teams picked above the Broncos in the Mountain West Preseason Coaches Poll.
Â
SCOUTING THE AZTECS: The Aztecs were picked to finish second in the Mountain West Preseason Coaches Poll but currently find themselves tied for fifth in the standings after going 1-1-0 in the opening weekend of conference play.
Â
Last weekend San Diego State opened its MW campaign with a two-match road trip, defeating Colorado State 1-0 before dropping a match to Wyoming 3-1.
Â
The Aztec offense is led by freshman standout Denise Castro who has scored five of her team's eight goals this season. Alexa Madueno has been San Diego State's goalkeeper all season long and will enter Friday's contest with a goals against average of 2.10.
Â
The Aztecs own a 9-6-0 record in the all-time series against the Broncos. San Diego State won both matches in the 2021 spring season, winning 3-1 in San Diego and 1-0 in Boise. The Broncos are 3-3 all-time against the Aztecs when playing in San Diego.
Â
SCOUTING THE LOBOS: New Mexico is the defending Mountain West champion after finishing with the best record during the 2021 spring season. The title defense is off to a good start as it finished 2-0-0 last weekend with road wins over Wyoming and Colorado State.
Â
The Lobos sport a triple-threat attack with three players who have scored five or more goals. Jadyn Edwards and Zaria Katesigwa pace the team with six apiece with Molly Myers adding five. Edwards has also contributed four assists on the season, giving her a team-best 16 points.
Â
New Mexico leads the all-time series with Boise State, 6-4-2, but the Broncos are unbeaten in the last four meetings. The most recent contest between the two was in the 2019 Mountain West semifinal, a match the Broncos won 6-0 to on the way to their first MW title.
Â
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: The Boise State defense was impressive once again last weekend. Jocelyn Stephens earned MW Defensive Player of the Week honors after playing all 200 minutes for the Broncos who gave up a combined 10 shots across both matches. The Broncos now have seven shutouts in ten matches this season. Prior to Jim Thomas' arrival in 2013, Boise State had only earned seven shutouts in a season two times. Since then the team has met the mark on four different occasions under Thomas.
