Broncos Rewrite the Record Book in California

BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State track and field team experienced a record-setting weekend in California, with two of the top marks in school history falling, as the Broncos competed at the Bryan Clay Invitational, Mt. SAC Relays and Long Beach Invitational, April 14-16.
"There was a lot of great effort across the board this weekend, especially from athletes who struggled in their first time out but bounced back and did special things in later races," head coach Corey Ihmels said.
Freshman Angus Fitzgerald raced his way to a school record in the men's 800-meter run at the Bryan Clay Invitational, Thursday afternoon. The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native crossed the finish line in a time of 1:49.18, registering a top-25 finish in a field of nearly 200 student-athletes.
Fitzgerald's mark narrowly bested David Elliott's 2015 time of 1:49.48, as he became just the third Bronco in school history to clock a sub-1:50 800m time.
"Angus [Fitzgerald] continues to impress as a true freshman," Ihmels said. "He is starting to race without fear and position himself to perform at a high level. He took the lead from 300 meters out and really made the race go. He has a lot more in the tank, and we're excited to watch that unfold the rest of this season."
A few hours later, under the stadium lights in Walnut, Calif., seniors Logan Rees and Miler Haller made history, becoming the first two Broncos to record 10,000m times under 29 minutes at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Rees finished a step ahead of his teammate, clocking a time of 28:45.65 and shattering the Boise State school record by almost 16 seconds. Haller registered a time of 28:46.43, the second-fastest mark in program history.
"I couldn't be happier for Logan [Rees] and Miler [Haller]," Ihmels said. "They both have been through a lot with injuries and setbacks, and to be able to do that together was really special. They are the epitome of what it means to be a Bronco and who we want all of our athletes and potential athletes to look up to."
Friday, the 1500m races stole the show at the Bryan Clay Invitational, as seniors Jonathan Shields, Dario De Caro and Henry Mong each posted a Boise State top-five time.
Shields led the Blue and Orange, shaving nearly two seconds off his previously established No. 2 mark in the record book with a time of 3:41.77.
Additionally, De Caro (3:42.58) and Mong (3:43.66) notched the third and fourth-fastest times in program history, respectively.
During the third and final day of competition, junior MaLeigha Menegatti captured the Broncos' lone event title of the weekend at the Long Beach Invitational, topping the podium in the women's 800m race with a time of 2:05.53.
Senior Kristie Schoffield finished just behind Menegatti, taking second (2:07.09).
Following a weekend off, Boise State will travel to Fresno, Calif., to compete at the Fresno State Invitational, April 30.
