Shields Breaks 5000m School Record

4/2/2022 7:25:00 PM | Track & Field

BOISE, Idaho – Senior Jonathan Shields shaved nearly four seconds off the school record in the men's 5,000-meter race, as the Boise State track and field team split its squad this weekend, competing at both the Mike Fanelli Track Classic in San Francisco, Calif., and the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif., April 1-2.

Shields' record-breaking performance came at the Stanford Invitational, Friday night. The Sheffield, England native crossed the finish line in a time of 13:38.56, becoming the first Bronco in school history to run a sub-13:40 5,000m time.

"Johnny [Shields] continues to impress, and lowering that school record speaks volumes of the year he is having," said head coach Corey Ihmels. "Those things don't get accomplished without his hard work, as well as being surrounded by a great group of teammates who continue to push each other each day. It takes a team. Big things are ahead, that's for sure."

In addition to Shields' school record, sophomore Nyenuchi Okemgbo, junior MaLeigha Menegatti and freshman Maggie Larson also etched their names into the record book, Saturday afternoon.

Okemgbo posted the second-fastest time in Bronco history in the women's 400m hurdles en route to winning the event at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic. Her time of 1:00.08 also set a new meet record.

At the Stanford Invitational, Menegatti dropped over two seconds in the women's 800m race, registering the third-fastest time in program history with a 2:04.85.

Larson, on her first attempt in the women's triple jump, recorded a mark of 12.42m, the fifth-longest jump in school history, and the first addition to Boise State's top-five performance list in eight years (Jasmyn Jewett; 2014).

"We made great progress across the board this weekend," Ihmels said. "As a coaching staff, we are very happy with everyone's competitiveness as we begin the outdoor season. We had a presence at the front of numerous events and look forward to continuing that as the season progresses."

In total, the Broncos accumulated seven heat wins and four event wins over the course of the weekend, including two event victories by high jumper Alison Kremer.

Kremer topped the podium in the women's high jump (low pit) at the Stanford Invitational, Friday, setting a new personal-record height of 1.65m. On Saturday, she competed at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, winning the event with a jump of 1.63m.

Three of the Blue and Orange's heat victories came in back-to-back-to-back heats of the women's and men's 1500m races at the Stanford Invitational, Friday.

Senior Kristie Schoffield flew by her competition, winning section six of the women's 1500m in a time of 4:26.23. In the following heat, junior Nathan Dunn secured the victory (3:50.83) and freshman Angus Fitzgerald captured his section of the 1500m (3:51.40), narrowly besting Air Force's Sean Maison by 0.05 seconds.

Next, the Broncos return to California for the third-consecutive weekend to compete at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, April 8-9.
