Sippel Reaches Quarterfinals at SoCal Intercollegiate

LOS ANGELES – Boise State senior Sam Sippel led a four-man contingent at the SoCal Intercollegiate over the weekend by reaching the singles and doubles – with Jett Middleton – quarterfinals in Los Angeles.
Sippel opened the tournament seeded into the main draw for both singles and doubles. In singles, the Nuernberg, Germany, senior recorded straight-set victories in the first two rounds. He defeated Azusa Pacific's Elias Waler 6-2, 6-4, then followed with a 7-6(2), 6-2 win over Arizona's Inaki Cabrera-Bello in the round of 16. He came up short in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-2 to Southern California's Lodewijk Weststrate.
In doubles, the tandem of Sippel and Middleton shut out Alexander Edmonston and Spencer Cinco from Concordia Irvine, 6-0. The win advanced the Bronco duo into the quarterfinal round, where they fell 6-2 to Oregon's Matthew Burton and Lachlan Robertson.
The Broncos Middleton, Idriss Haddouch and Liam Toroman began singles competition in the qualifying rounds, where they had mixed results.
Middleton opened with a three-set victory 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-2 over Concordia Irvine's Mattis Le Montagner, then fell to San Diego's Nikhil Niranjan 6-4, 6-3. In a pickup match, he later defeated Oklahoma State's Goran Zgola 6-2, 6-1.
Haddouch also recorded a win in his first match, defeating Brett Pearson from Washington in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. He then faced Portland's Nicolas Ocana, coming up short 6-1, 6-3. Haddouch later collected a pickup match victory over Portland's Stefan Skolebev 7-6(4), 6-4.
Toroman split on the weekend, falling in three sets 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 in his opener, before regrouping to defeat Le Montagner 6-1, 6-1 in a pickup contest.
