Broncos Roll Past Cougars, Stay Perfect at Home

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State men's tennis remained perfect at home this year with a dominating 7-0 win over BYU Saturday afternoon at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center. The win improved the Broncos to 5-2 overall and 4-0 at home, while BYU dropped to 3-4 overall.

The Blue and Orange claimed the team doubles point with a 6-2 win on court three by Jan Lucca Marquardt and Sam Sippel, while the point-clinching victory came at No.2 doubles, where Simon Arca Costas and Michael Bott won 6-3.

Up one, Boise State carried its momentum into singles, sweeping the first five matches in straight sets. Moortgat's 6-2, 6-3 win on court six started the ball rolling in singles. John Chin was not far behind him as he put away his opponent 6-2, 6-2 to make it 3-0 Boise State.

The match-clinching victory came at No. 1 singles, where Sippel dispatched his opponent in two competitive sets, 6-4, 6-3.

James Van Herzeele and Arca Costas followed with two-set wins on courts three and two to make it 6-0 Broncos.

Notables

  • Boise State's 6-1 victory margin is the largest in the series since March 2011, when BYU defeated the Broncos by the same score. It is the largest margin of victory for the Broncos in the series since defeating BYU 7-0 in February of 2004.
  • The win evens the series at 12 wins each in contests played since 1987.
  • Arca Costas' singles win moved him to 87 in his career, two short of a three-way tie for 11th all-time at Boise State.
  • Arca Costas' singles and doubles wins moved him to 152 combined career victories, one short of tying for 13th.
  • Idriss Haddouch debuted for Boise State, playing at No. 4 singles.
  • Sippel picked up his 14th singles win of the year and moved to 4-1 in dual matches on court one.
  • Moortgat collected his 11th singles victory of the year.
  • Michael Bott and Arca Costas improved to 7-2 overall in doubles and 6-1 in team duals this spring. It is Bott's team-leading 16th win this year and Arca Costas' 14th.
  • Van Herzeele earned his 13th singles victory.

What's Next

Boise State will be on the road for three next week when the Broncos head back to California to face UC Irvine, Denver and Loyola Marymount.
