Baker Leads Broncos at Regional Championships

LAS VEGAS – Boise State men's tennis wrapped up six days of competition at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships, led by Carson Baker, who finished third in the singles competition.

The Broncos had eight players competing in the singles main draw, with Baker, Stewart Aronson and Filip Soderqvist advancing to the round of 16 from an original field of 64. Of the three, Baker was the lone player to reach the quarterfinals.

Baker then earned a hard-fought 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 victory over No. 3 seed Raffaello Papajcik from Denver to reach the semifinals, where he came up short against top-seeded Ilia Snitari of UNLV, 6-4, 6-4. He closed out his run with a strong performance in the third-place match, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

The Broncos were also well represented in doubles, with four teams in the draw. Baker and partner Avery Tallakson led the way, reaching the semifinals. The duo, who had won seven consecutive matches this fall, dropped to the eventual tournament champions Adam Chodur and Otto Schreiner of BYU, 3-6, 6-3, 10-2.

In the singles consolation draw, senior Taiyo Kurata claimed the title with consecutive victories over Idaho's Chetanna Amadike (7-6(4), 6-3) and UNLV's Vitaliy Horovoy (6-4, 7-6(2)).

Notables:

Carson Baker is 9-3 in singles this fall.
Baker and Avery Tallakson are 7-1 as a pair.
Taiyo Kurata won the consolation title and is 7-2 in singles this season.
The Broncos have had a player reach the third-place match in two consecutive seasons.
