WICHITA, Kan. – Newcomer Julius Seifert's third-set tiebreaker win clinched Boise State the match as the Blue and Orange held off the Wichita State Shockers 4-3 on the road Friday afternoon in Kansas. It was the fifth-straight victory for Boise State, which improved to 5-1 overall.
Boise State opened the match by claiming the team doubles point 2-1 with victories on court one by Jett Middleton and Carson Baker (6-2), followed by the point clincher on court two by Taiyo Kurata and Julius Seifert by a tight 7-5 score.
With the doubles point recorded and heading into singles, the Broncos needed to win three of the six singles contests to secure victory. They would get it done, but it was not easy, as it came down to two final-set tiebreakers to get the win.
After Wichita State had rallied to take the lead at 2-1, the Broncos' Middleton pulled the Blue and Orange even (2-2) with a straight-set 6-4, 7-6(2) win at No. 1 singles.
James Van Herzeele put Boise State back on top (3-2) with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.
Wichita State came back and tied the contest at 3-3, setting up the final and decisive match at No. 3 singles, where Seifert was battling Alejandro Jacome.
They split the first two sets by 6-4 scores, with Seifert winning set one. Then, down 3-5 and 5-6 in the third set, Seifert rallied twice to force the frame into a tiebreaker at 6-6. The sophomore from Eppstein, Germany, took control in the tiebreaker, winning it 7-3 to clinch the match for the Broncos, keeping their win streak alive.
