Broncos Beat New Mexico to Go Back-to-Back as MW Regular Season Champions

BOISE, Idaho – Senior Jett Middleton's straight-set win on court one clinched the match over New Mexico Saturday afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Center to hand Boise State its second-consecutive Mountain West Regular Season Championship.
 
The win was Boise State's 12th straight to close the regular season and its 22nd consecutive home win. The Broncos improved to 20-4 overall this year and is undefeated, 6-0, in conference play.
 
Boise State trailed 1-0 following doubles as the Lobos claimed the team point.
 
The Broncos regrouped heading into singles, rallying to claim the first two matches for a 2-1 advantage. Lukas Velik was the first player off the court for Boise State, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. Idriss Haddouch won the second contest for the Blue and Orange with a three-set, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, victory on court five.
 
After New Mexico reclaimed the lead 3-2 with wins on courts four and six, Carson Baker pulled the Broncos even with a come-from-behind three-set, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, win on court two.
 
Middleton came up big for Boise State, battling through two tiebreakers at No. 1 singles to clinch the match in straight sets, 7-6(8), 7-6(1), for the Broncos, 4-3.

Notables

  • With the win, Boise State clinched the number one seed and a first-round bye in next week's MW Championship tournament at Las Vegas.
  • Boise State won its fifth conference regular season title since 2009 (the first year they competed for regular season championships), fourth during the MW era, and the second straight.
  • The Broncos have now won 23 combined conference championships (regular season and tournament) in their history, four of which have occurred in the last three years.
  • The win gave the Broncos their 22nd 20-plus win season in program history and third straight.
  • The current 12-match win streak is tied for the third longest in program history.
  • Lukas Velik won his 21st singles match of the year, the second most on the team.
  • Idriss Haddouch won his 14th straight singles match and 19th of the year.  He is 14-1 in spring duals. He also won his 52nd career singles match.
  • Carson Baker won his team-high 22nd singles match and sixth consecutive contest.
  • Jett Middleton – ranked 120 nationally – won his 17th singles match of the year.

What's Next

  • The two-time defending MW tournament champions will head to Las Vegas next week looking for a third straight title. The Broncos will start play in the semifinal round versus an opponent to be determined. The MW Championship begins on Wednesday and runs through Friday.
