Broncos Fall in Heartbreaker to Gonzaga

Boise State men's tennis team fought hard but lost on the final match to Gonzaga 3-4.
BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State men's tennis team fought hard to finish opening weekend strong, but fell to Gonzaga 4-3.
Gonzaga took the lead early on after winning the doubles point. The tandem of Jack Heslin and Luka Soskic fought hard to stay ahead against Gonzaga's Sam Feit and Ruadhan O'Sullivan, but ended up falling 7-6 (6). The No. 2 doubles match between Max Blancaneaux and Simon Arca Costas versus the Bulldogs' Vincent Rettke and Matthew Perkins was hard fought with the Broncos leading 6-5 when it was discontinued after Gonzaga clinched the doubles with a win on court three.
Soskic put Boise State on the board 1-1 as the first singles to finish with a 6-2, 6-4, victory over Hunter Egger at No. 3 singles. After Gonzaga regained the lead, Arca Costas tied the match again at 2-2 after sweeping his match against Matthew Perkins 6-3, 6-3.
Jack Heslin came back from a set down against Ruadhan O'Sullivan to force it into a third set where he won 3-5, 6-4, 7-6 (6) to tie the team score at 3-3.
It came down to court two where Blancaneaux fought hard before falling in a nail-biter for it all against Sam Feit 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-2 to give the point to the Bulldogs 4-3.
The loss moves the Broncos to 1-1 as they continue their homestand next weekend against Lewis-Clark State on Feb. 1st and Idaho State on Feb. 3rd in Boise.
"I'm super proud of the team for the way they competed against Gonzaga," said head coach Kristian Widen. "It is important that the team gains experience from a match like this early on." When asked about the goals for the next two matches, Widen stated, "This early in the season it's all about improving and correcting. We have a good five days to reflect on this and work on our weaknesses."
