Kryvchun’s Run at ITA Mountain Regional Ends in Quarterfinals

Kyryll Kryvchun is the first Bronco since 2014 to reach the regional quarterfinals.

DENVER - Boise State's Kyryll Kryvchun advanced to the ITA Mountain Region Championships quarterfinals to lead the Broncos on Friday. Unfortunately, his run, as well as Boise State's, ended Friday afternoon when he fell in his quarterfinal match.

"This was a good tournament for us, with lots of strong players and teams here," said head coach Kristian Widen. "We are getting tighter as a group and each guy is understanding what it needs to look like, being a Bronco. Blake (Bayldon) and Kyryll (Kryvchun) showed that they are to be reckoned with as a dubs-duo and that is exciting, because of the importance of getting that first point (doubles point) in dual matches. Kyryll's showing here makes him a top-eight player in a 128 draw, something that hasn't been done by the Broncos since 2014. We are definitely back as a team that the region respects and we have great things to build on and a hungry group that can't wait to clean details up and get better."

Kryvchun began his day defeating Raul Dobai from New Mexico in a close match up 7-5, 7-6(5) in the round of 16. With that win Kryvchun became the first Bronco to reach the regional quarterfinals since Garrett Patton in 2014. Kryvchun was then defeated in the quarterfinal 6-3, 6-4 by New Mexico's Stepan Holis.

"As a team, we competed very well and we are meshing, which will be important for the spring," said Kryvchun. "Today, I left it all on the court, but I am not satisfied with the outcome which gives me energy and motivation to get back on court and continue getting better. I want to represent the Broncos even stronger, in the future."

In the doubles round of 16, Blake Bayldon and Kryvchun lost to New Mexico's Holis and Alexander Maggs by an 8-6 score.

In other singles action, Simon Arca Costas came up short against Denver's Pedro Fernandez Del Valle 7-6(1), 2-6, 1-0(10-8) in a tightly contested match in the consolation draw's round of 16.

The three defeats on Friday officially ended Boise State's run at this year's ITA Mountain Region Championship. Coming up next for the Blue and Orange is the final tournament of the fall campaign as the Broncos travel to the Oregon Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore., Nov. 1-3.
