BOISE, Idaho - Boise State men's tennis cruised past instate-rival Idaho 7-0 on Saturday morning in Boise. Boise State won a challenging doubles point 2-1, then swept all six singles matches in straight sets. With the victory the Broncos improved to 7-5 overall.
"I'm happy with the win, we needed it," said head coach Kristian Widen. "We've been struggling a little bit lately with our confidence, so it feels good when everybody gets to contribute and everybody gets a W (win). We still have work to do on doubles, we came out a little bit flat against a really talented Idaho team, that can't happen. I felt like we got drawn into their momentum a little too much. We need to step up and be the team that takes charge, especially at home. But obviously I'm really happy with this win and with this being such a rivalry back when I played here, it's always nice to beat Idaho."
Doubles was a battle to the end with all three going the distance, two were decided in tiebreakers. Boise State eventually claimed the point starting with Simon Arca Costas' and Blake Bayldon's victory over Idaho's Esteban Santibanez and Guilherme Scarpelli 7-5 on court one. Bayldon and Arca Costas, who are ranked 56th nationally, improved to 14-2 overall with the win today.
The final two doubles matches went to tiebreakers. The Broncos clinched the team point for doubles when Kyryll Kryvchun and Kemal Karagozoglu rallied from 5-2 down in the match to force it to a tiebreaker where they won 7-2. They defeated Vivek Ramesh and Adam Taylor 7-6 (2).
The third doubles match was tight with Boise State's Wyatt DeMulling and Michael Bott coming up just short falling 7-6(6).
Boise State clinched the team victory with wins at No. 2, 5 and 3 singles. Bayldon won on court two when his opponent medically retired with the Bronco up 6-2, 1-0. It was the junior's 15th victory of the season.
Mark Papadopoulos was the next to finish with a dominant victory at No. 5 singles. He beat Idaho's Vivek Ramesh 6-1, 6-0 to improve to 8-4 overall.
The clinching win was accomplished by Arca Costas on court three. The sophomore rolled past his opponent in two sets 6-1, 6-3.
The final three singles matches also went to the Blue and Orange with DeMulling rallying in both sets to win 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 4 position. Meanwhile, Bott won 6-1, 7-5 on court six and Kryvchun took care of business on court one 6-3, 6-4.
Boise State will be back in action next weekend when the Broncos travel to face the Washington Huskies in Seattle.
