Boise State completed opening weekend undefeated going 2-0 with wins over Montana and Grand Canyon.

BOISE, Idaho – Wyatt DeMulling clinched the win for Boise State Sunday afternoon over the Grand Canyon Antelopes in a match that was closer than the score shows. Three of the Broncos' six singles victories were decided by tiebreakers as the Blue and Orange made it a clean sweep on the weekend to move to 2-0 overall.
"It was a good college match, tough matches and the 7-0 score doesn't really reflect what was going on out there," said head coach Kristian Widen. "We came through when we needed to and the match score could have been closer. I'm proud of the guys for pulling through in tough situations this early in the season, this was a very good match for us and we're going to learn from this."

DeMulling, the lone senior on the squad, clinched the win when he downed Wolmar Boris-Moller in straight sets on court five. The Seattle native was forced into a tiebreaker in set two before he put it away 6-2, 7-6(2). That kept DeMulling perfect on the year at 2-0 and improved his career win total to a team-best 53.

The day opened with the Broncos taking the doubles point 2-0 with wins on courts two and three. Michael Bott and Kyryll Kryvchun started the ball rolling at No. 3 taking the match 6-1.

The duo of Caden Moortgat and Lukas Ridemar brought home the doubles point for the Blue and Orange with a 6-4 victory on court two. The newcomers went undefeated on their debut weekend finishing at 2-0.

"The first week was great, the energy with the guys was great, I had so much fun," said Moortgat. "I've been thinking about playing and wanting to play for so long now, and now that I'm here it's just how I thought it would be. I'm really enjoying myself and playing with a ton of energy.

The team played great, they (Grand Canyon) were a tough team. I mean, we ended up getting the win 7-0, but it was close. Everybody had a tough match and everyone came through. So that's a great feeling and great to see."

For the second-straight match, redshirt-sophomore Simon Arca Costas was the first Bronco off the court in singles. He claimed a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory over Freddie Grant at the fourth position to move to 2-0 on the year while earning his 42nd career singles win.

Blake Bayldon moved Boise State to within one of clinching the victory when he dispatched Jiri Novak in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Bayldon's win kept him perfect on the year and set up DeMulling's match clinching victory moments later.

The final three singles contests went to the Blue and Orange as well with Lawrence Sciglitano (6-4, 7-6(1)), Kryvchun (4-6, 6-2, 6-1) and Luka Soskic (7-5, 7-6(5)) wrapping it up for the final 7-0 team score.

"Kyryll was tough out there today," Widen said. "He played another guy who is known to be a tough out, but Kyryll was the tougher guy this afternoon. He was a little bit up and down with his focus, but he came through against an opponent he knew from his junior college days. I liked the way Kyryll never stopped pushing the gas pedal, he kept going even though he lost a tough set one."

Soskic recorded his first singles victory of the year and first in over 20 months after missing all of 2019-20 as he recovered from an injury.

"We really don't have any expectations for Luka right now other than getting his legs back after the long layoff," said Widen. "I thought he did a great job today. He's not playing his best tennis but he's well underway and he's a huge contributor to our team. The thing with Luka is that he has been training for so long to come back from the injury, that right now it's all about getting back to match toughness. Luka is just going to get better and better every match he plays."

Boise State will take next week off before hitting the road Feb. 4-6 for a trio of contests in southern California.
