Broncos Sweep Doubleheader To Open Season

The Boise State women's tennis program started their season with a bang, earning wins against Idaho State and Lewis-Clark State in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
With over 300 days in between matches, no one would have been surprised if the Boise State women's
tennis team showed some rust when they played on Saturday. The rust, however, failed to show. When
they hit the court for the first time in almost a year the Broncos looked solid, winning both legs of a
doubleheader against Idaho State and Lewis-Clark State.
Â
"347 days is a long time and I think that was definitely on our minds," said head coach Beck Roghaar.
"But I think what it's about is what we've been doing over those last 347 days to prepare ourselves for
right now. I felt proud of our team coming in because we felt prepared, and even though the nerves
were going to be there we were all really amped to play."
IDAHO STATE
In the first match of the day the Broncos got off to a good start early by winning a back-and-forth
doubles point 2-1. On court one Joana Baptista and Shauna Heffernan rallied from behind early to win 6-
2, while Holly Stewart and Pauline Ernstberger handled business on court two, winning 6-2 as well to
clinch the doubles point to put the Broncos up 1-0 on the Bengals heading into singles play.
Â
Baptista kept the Bronco's momentum going in singles play as she cruised to a quick 6-2, 6-2 victory over
the Bengals' Alexandra Arkhipov on court two. Vanessa Timm followed closely behind, winning her
match against Angela Walker on court five 6-0, 6-4 to put the Broncos one point away from clinching the
win.
Â
True-freshman Pauline Ernstberger was a star for the Broncos on Saturday, winning 6-0, 6-4 over Sol
O'Lideadha which earned the Broncos their first win of the season and the first victory of her collegiate
career. Ana Conde Vendrell kept the ball rolling for the Blue and Orange on court six, earning a straight-
set victory over Lola O'Lideadha 6-2, 7-5 to extend the Bronco lead to 5-0.
Â
Even with the Bronco victory secured the Bengals did not go home quietly as they rallied back to win the
final two matches on courts one and three. Though she suffered the loss, Heffernan impressed in her
debut, battling in a gritty 5-7, 7-5, 1-0(5) match on court three. Stewart also competed incredibly hard in
her three-set loss, falling 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in a nail-biter on court one.
Â
Winning the first match of the season is nothing new for Roghaar. Since taking over the program in
2010, his teams have never lost the opening match of the season, going 11-0 in that span. "I think that's
really a testament to the culture of our program where the players understand what it takes to come
out and be ready to go for our season," said Roghaar. "It builds a lot of confidence to start off the year
with some wins and we're looking forward to do more of that along the way this season."
Â
LEWIS CLARK STATE
The Broncos doubles teams continued to dominate in the second matchup of the day as they cruised 3-0
over Lewis-Clark State, including two shutouts. Shutout one came via Baptista and Heffernan at the No.
1 position, the other was on court three courtesy of Timm and Nicole Discenza. The match on court two
was also won comfortably as Stewart and Ernstberger breezed to a 6-1 win to help the Broncos head
into the singles with a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Blue and Orange capped off the day going 6-0 in singles matches against the Warriors. Two more
Bronco freshmen earned their first collegiate victories, as Discenza shutout Alexandra Barry on court
four 6-0, 6-0 and Heffernan won 6-3, 6-0 over Begona Andres at the No. 2 slot. Fellow freshman
Ernstberger earned a shutout win of her own, defeating Alexis Maison 6-0, 6-0 on court three.
Â
Baptista had an impressive showing on court one, defeating Laura Diaz 6-0, 6-0, and Mae McCutcheon
earned her first singles win of the season on court five, taking down Sophie Uhlenkott 6-1, 6-0 . Corey
Patton Lossner put the icing on the cake to end the day with her 5-7, 6-1, 1-0(3) win on court 6 to send
the Broncos home with a sweep.
Â
All three true-freshmen were able to earn their first collegiate win for the Broncos on Saturday. "Our
three freshmen coming out and getting their first action was phenomenal," said Roghaar. "They're as
good as advertised and we're super excited about their futures and how they're going to contribute and
all they've brought to the team already."
Â
The Broncos were able to do what they were hoping to this weekend, beginning the year 2-0 and picking
up right where they left off after last season was cut short. Up next Boise State will play host to BYU
(Feb. 12) and Montana (Feb. 14) as they look to build upon their 2-0 start.
