Broncos Split Friday Doubleheader with Nevada

5/14/2021 7:19:00 PM | Softball

Karlee Johnson and Bella Rocco hit seventh inning home runs to win game one for Boise State.

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State softball earned a doubleheader split with Nevada Friday afternoon in Boise with the Broncos taking game one 4-3, while the Wolf Pack took the second contest 3-1. Boise State used a pair of seventh inning home runs by Karlee Johnson and Bella Rocco to take the opener, while Nevada kept the Bronco hitters in check in the second game to rally for the win. The split moved the Broncos to 20-24 overall and 11-12 in Mountain West Conference play, while Nevada went to 23-16 on the year and 15-8 in league.

"The game one comeback was so fun to see for our team," said head coach Maggie Huffaker. "All of our seniors did a great job setting the tone today so it was fitting for Karlee (Johnson) to come up with the seventh-inning homer, and Bella Rocco just continues to get better and better, it was fun to see her come through again."

Kelsey Lalor led the Boise State batters on Friday going a combined 3-for-5 with a double. She was followed by Ashlyn Adams who went 3-for-7 with a run. Alison Seng, Karlee Johnson and Bella Rocco all recorded a pair of hits apiece. However, the Wolf Pack out hit the Broncos .296 to .283 and 16 hits to 15.

The regular season finale is Saturday afternoon against the Nevada Wolf Pack in game three of the series, first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Dona Larsen Park. It will also be Senior Day with the three seniors being honored after the game concludes.

GAME ONE RECAP: Boise State 4, Nevada 3
Karlee Johnson and Bella Rocco's seventh inning heroics rallied the Broncos from 3-1 down to a 4-3 victory when they both hit homers. Rocco's long ball was a two RBI walk-off over the left field fence for the win.

Boise State out hit Nevada 10 to eight in game one with each team committing an error. Karlee Johnson, Rocco and Ashlyn Adams all recorded two hits to lead a group of seven Broncos that tallied at least one hit in the contest.

Nevada struck early, scoring a run in the top of the first, then extended its advantage to 3-0 when the Wolf Pack brought two runners across the plate in the top of the fourth.

The Broncos began their rally in the fifth when Rocco singled to center field to bring Karlee Johnson home from third.

Hannah Bailey entered the game as a relief pitcher in the sixth inning and proceeded to shut the Wolf Pack down allowing one hit while retiring the other six batters she faced in the final two frames. Bailey collected the win in the circle, her ninth of the season (9-1).

After going three up and three down in the bottom of the sixth, Boise State had one more opportunity to rally in the seventh.

With one out, Karlee Johnson opened the scoring with a solo home run over the left field wall to make it 3-2 Nevada. Then with two outs, Adams singled to shortstop. Rocco was the next batter to the plate where she sent her second walk-off homer — two RBI — of the year over the left field fence for the game-winning runs.

GAME TWO RECAP: Nevada 3, Boise State 1
Boise State opened the scoring with a run in the second inning, but failed to score anymore down the stretch as Nevada rallied for the win with runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Boise State recorded a hit in each of the first four innings and its final in the seventh, but unfortunately, they could not string any of them together to get the offense moving. In the end, Nevada out hit the Broncos eight to five in securing the win.

The Broncos scored their lone run when Seng came home from third during a run down on an attempted steal of second base by Jalen Ervin during the second inning. That run gave the Blue and Orange a slim 1-0 lead over the Wolf Pack.

Nevada loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning but could only bring one runner home as the Broncos were able to get out of the inning tied at 1-1. Boise State ended the Wolf Pack threat with a bases-loaded double play that went to home plate then first base — started by pitcher Taylor Caudill to Abby Bumcrot to Seng.

The Wolf Pack took the lead in the fifth when Lauren Gutierrez homered to center field for the final runs of the game.

Neither team managed any offense in the final two innings as Nevada claimed the win for the doubleheader split.
