Boise State rally comes up short against Montana

Broncos fall 4-3 at home to the Grizzlies
BOISE, Idaho – Down three to Montana in the home opener, Boise State men's tennis' rally came up just short as the Broncos fell to the Grizzlies 4-3 Friday night in Boise. The Broncos were led by Jan Lucca Marquardt, Simon Arca Costas and James Van Herzeele who all recorded singles victories for the blue and orange. The loss dropped Boise State to 2-4 overall with two more home matches on the slate for Sunday against Seattle U and North Dakota.
The Grizzlies took the early lead over the Broncos claiming the team doubles point 2-0. Montana won the team point coming out on top in two of the three tightly contested matches winning 6-4 at No. 3 and 1 doubles, respectively. Court two was abandoned with Boise State's Arca Costas and Caden Moortgat leading 5-4.
After Montana had extended its advantage to 3-0 with singles victories on courts four and three, the Blue and Orange began to rally. Marquardt started the rally with a straight-set victory on court six over Montana's Milo Benn 6-1, 6-4. With the win the junior from Germany improved to 7-6 in singles on the year.
The second Bronco win came at No. 2 singles where Arca Costas put away former Bronco Lawrence Sciglitano in two sets 6-4, 6-4 to cut Boise State's deficit to 3-2. The victory increased his team-high for career singles wins to 61.
The final two singles contests went three sets before the team winner was decided. Court one would be the first of the two to finish as Montana's Ed Pudney rallied to defeat Boise State freshman Pedro Liborio 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to clinch the Grizzlies' victory up 4-2 with only No. 5 singles to go.
The final match went to Boise State as James Van Herzeele rallied from 3-2 down in the third to beat Moritz Stoeger 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-4 on court five. The win improved the true freshman's singles record to 3-3 since joining Boise State during winter break.
