BOISE, Idaho – Boise State men's tennis opened a three-match homestand on Friday with a 4-3 victory over Montana State. The Broncos rolled out to an early 4-0 lead to clinch the victory before Montana State rallied to close within one by winning the final three singles matches.
"I was pleased with our effort. I think you know it was really great to see a lot of things that we've been working on over the last couple of weeks show in our play," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "It was awesome to start off the weekend with a win. I think whatever these guys focus on we're seeing them improve on. It was great to see them come out and play so well after having the last two weeks off from matches, it's kind of a different challenge to navigate in the middle of the season."
Boise State began the match by winning the team doubles point 2-0 with victories on courts two and three. The Bronco tandem of Jan Lucca Marquardt and James Van Herzeele started things off with an impressive shutout on court two dispatching their opponents 6-0.
"I felt good out there today. It was a hard match, especially when he started to come back," said Van Herzeele. "Personally, I felt like I played a really solid match throughout. The goal for this match was to respond and I felt like the whole team did that really well. We all pushed each other to respond and came up with W (win)."
Michael Bott and Ryo Minakata did not take much longer to put away their Bobcat opponents, winning on court three by a 6-1 score, clinching the team point in the process.
Boise State entered the singles portion of the competition up one and wasted little time extending its advantage. Senior Simon Arca Costas began the run when he rallied from 4-2 down in set one to take the frame 7-5. He then cruised to a set two victory to defeat Montana State's Matej Panik 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to claim his 64th career singles victory.
Van Herzeele, a freshman, gave the Blue and Orange a 3-0 lead following his straight-set win over Georgios Nouchakis on court five by a 6-0, 6-4 score to improve to 6-3 on the season.
"I was extremely impressed with James (Van Herzeele) today," said Roghaar. "You know, just to see him mature throughout the season has been a really fun journey. Just to see him handle pressure moments and situations in and off the court, and to see the kind of evolution he has made has been really special."
Minakata then clinched the team victory for Boise State on court six where he beat MSU's Joaquin Espinoza in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
The win over Montana State improved the Broncos to 6-5 overall with two more contests on the slate for this weekend. They will face Idaho State Saturday at 5 p.m., then Pacific at noon on Sunday.
