
Broncos Fall in MW Quarterfinal to New Mexico

USAFA, Colo. - Boise State's men's tennis team fell 4-0 to New Mexico Friday afternoon in the Mountain West Men's Tennis Championship quarterfinal round at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. The Lobos took the team doubles point, then followed with three straight singles victories to claim the win.
Boise State was led by freshman Pedro Liborio who was leading his singles match when New Mexico clinched the team victory.
Liborio, the MW Co-Freshman of the Year and All-MW honoree battled UNM's Arda Azkara into a third set and was up 2-1 when the contest was abandoned, 6-4, 5-7, 2-0. He finished his debut campaign at 9-12 overall and 7-10 at No. 1 singles during the team dual season.
Minakata had just won the second set to force his contest to the third versus the Lobos' Alex Maggs when his match was abandoned at 6-7(5), 6-1. The sophomore concluded the season on a four-match wins streak and 14-9 overall, 12-4 in dual matches.
James Van Herzeele rallied from a set down to force his match to a third with a set two victory. When the contest was called, he was trailing 3-6, 6-4, 2-3. The native of Thailand — who joined the team in January — ended his freshman campaign at 12-8 overall.
New Mexico opened the match taking the team doubles point 2-0. The Lobos then claimed the first three singles matches completed on courts three, four and two, respectively, to clinch the win and move on to Saturday's MW semifinal round.
Boise State concluded the 2022 campaign at 13-11 overall. As announced by the league office Friday morning, Simon Arca Costas, Liborio and Caden Moortgat all received postseason honors from the conference. Liborio was named the MW Co-Freshman of the Year and All-MW in singles, Arca Costas was All-MW in singles and doubles, while Moortgat was All-MW in doubles. The trio and the rest of the seven-member squad are expected to return next season.
